Mossley’s young squad will hopefully have learned a lot from this Manchester Premier Cup defeat against a very strong and experienced Droylsden side currently pushing for promotion to the national Conference.

The visitors played great pass and move football all night and it was to the Lilywhites credit that they stuck to their task throughout the game even when the outcome was certain.

Droylsden were first to hit top gear and took the lead after only five minutes when Chris Denham blasted home as he found a yard of space on the right.

The Lilywhites were not to be outdone though and five minutes later levelled the scores. Jordan Goodeve’s through ball found Leon Mike and the Mossley centre forward responded by curling a superb 25 yarder around Bloods keeper Jon Worsnop for a great goal.

It was nip and tuck for a lengthy spell with both teams playing good passing football but it was the visitors extra edge that fashioned a second goal on 25 minutes through Kevin Rapley.

At the other end Goodeve had a fierce free kick well held by Worsnop and the Droylsden keeper also positioned himself well to deny Joel Pilkington who had burst through from midfield.

Mossley were still very much in the game at the interval and five minutes into the second period thought they had scored another equaliser but the ball somehow stuck under Goodeve’s foot a yard from goal when he seemed a certain scorer and the chance was lost.

Mossley were quickly made to pay for their miss as Droylsden stretched their lead a couple of minutes later when Steve Sheil got caught dwelling on a clearance and Chris Denham nipped in to score from close range.

Mossley’s disappointment was compounded on 61 minutes when Jimmy Williams found space to fire through a crowded area to make the score 4-1.

Mossley refused to submit though and Goodeve was unlucky to see his spectacular overhead scissor kick come back off the bar while at the other end Terry Fearns saw an effort come back off the foot of the post and Lee Bracey made a fine triple save to deny Fearns twice and Denham as Droylsden turned on the style in the clsoing stages.
