Mossley are now 10 points adrift of safety in the UniBond League premier division following a 2-1 home derby defeat inflicted by Ashton United.

Manager Jason Beckford, whose side is without a win in 11 league matches, was absent after his wife collapsed at home yesterday morning and had to be taken by ambulance to hospital.

What made the latest Lilywhites loss even more unpalatable was the fact they led for over an hour.

Former Athletic legend David Eyres, now the Mossley captain, fired Mossley ahead in the fourth minute.

And it was a lead they held until midway through the second period when they conceded a penalty which even one staunch visiting fan described as “outrageous.”

Tom Baker scored from the spot and United sealed victory in the 75th minute through a long-range shot from former Athletic trainee Danny Forde which flew into the top corner of the net.
