Mossley went out of the UniBond League Cup at the first hurdle on a wet and windy night at Highbury Stadium.

Playing into the strong wind in the first half Mossley found the going tough and made little headway in the first 45 minutes. Fleetwood fared little better apart from their solitary goal half time lead when the diminutive Mickey Saunders found an inch of space on the right and tucked an angled shot past Trueman into the far corner from eight yards.

The second half was a different story and Mossley began to put the home side under pressure. The deserved equaliser came in the 56th minute. Chris Ward’s cross from the left was handled by McNiven and Ward took the spot kick himself blasting the ball into the bottom right hand corner from a surprisingly long run up.

The Lilywhites continued to press and home keeper Hale did well to keep out well struck efforts from Wright and Furnival and some at times desperate defending kept Mossley at bay.

At the other end Trueman did well to hold Bell’s fierce shot in a rare Fleetwood foray.

Chris Ward . . . scored from the spot

There had looked only one likely winner throughout the second half but with just five minutes remaining a hopeful ball into the box by Shaun Gray on the right somehow eluded everyone and ended up in the Mossley net.

Mossley pressed on vainly seeking another equaliser but it didn’t come and Fleetwood found their way into the hat for the third round draw.
