Mossley were denied a fully deserved victory over promotion chasers Hednesford Town by an 89th minute penalty miss.

It was rough justice on Mossley who had dominated the game throughout most of the 90 minutes against a very big and overtly physical Hednesford side who’s long ball approach was easily stifled apart from the early goal which had left the Lilywhites chasing the game.

After recent disappointments Jason Beckford rang the changes and gave debuts to David Eyres, Lee Shillito, James Turley and Chris Ward.

Mossley opened well and earned a couple of corners in the opening minutes but with only four minutes on the clock Hednesford scored with their first attack. A long ball out of defence caught out the Mossley rearguard and Ross Dyer had time to pick his spot past the advancing Trueman.

Undeterred Mossley pushed on, Shillito was getting around the back of the Hednesford defence on the right and Eyres probed for openings on the left. Wright and the diminutive Turley were causing problems for the visitors Goliath like central defenders while Knight and Pilkington were pressing the Hednesford midfield into countless errors.

The equaliser came in the 34th minute and gave the lively James Turley a debut goal as he controlled and drove an unstoppable shot from 20 yards that hit the underside of the bar and bounced back up into the net with Hednesford keeper Young well beaten.

The second half saw Mossley dominate proceedings, although chances were at a minimum as Hednesford broke platy up by conceding any number of fouls.

Mossley won their fair share of corners and got in plenty of crosses but Young was a competent keeper and handled very well.

Mossley almost broke the deadlock with ten minutes to play as Furnival won a back post header and Eyres was unlucky to see his close range effort come back off the underside of the bar and to safety.

Hopes were obviously raised in the last minute when Wright was bundled to the floor after good work by substitute Chris Ward but the Mossley number 9 unfortunately hit a weak spot kick to the keeper’s left that Young gathered easily.

Hednesford suddenly motivated to respond applied the pressure in stoppage time but Trueman was equal to the visitors only shot on target and what was a highly charged and exciting game ended all square.
