Mossley learned a harsh lesson that mistakes at this level get punished as they slumped to a disappointing home defeat by an ordinary looking Lincoln United side.

The Lilywhites opened well enough but failed to trouble Lincoln keeper Ziccardi as the visitors defended deeply and Mossley looked too often to the killer through ball with the wind and rain to their first half advantage.

Lincoln finally settled down and found an effective way of passing the ball through Mossley’s midfield and in giant striker Sam Wilkinson had a fine outlet.

It was Wilkinson who gave the visitors the lead on 13 minutes when Danny Trueman came to catch a right wing corner but misjudged the flight in the strong wind and the big number 10 was on hand to score with a free header.

Mossley tried hard to force the pace but couldn’t get their passing game together and Lincoln were looking comfortable and confident after Mossley had a series of shots charged down by a massed Lincoln defence.

If Mossley were to have any chance they needed to not concede again before the break but sadly that is just what they did. Cann went down under a mistimed challenge by the usually impeccable Danny White and Jonty Hawley sent Trueman the wrong way from the resultant spot kick.

Lincoln sat deeper and deeper after the break as Mossley came on strong in the later stages.

Terry Bowker . . . consolation goal

Terry Bowker reduced the arrears when he headed home after Joe Shaw and debutant loan signing Marvin McDonald worked a short corner with just eight minutes remaining.

Mossley created a couple of half chances but couldn’t find an equaliser as Lincoln played out the final minutes in the far corner and hung on to clinch the points.
