MOSSLEY breathed new life into their battle against relegation from the UniBond League premier division following last night's hard-earned 2-0 home victory against fellow strugglers Radcliffe Borough.

Suddenly the Lilywhites, who not long ago were cut well adrift, find themselves within five points of a position of safety and with renewed hope of staying up.

And last night's hero was Clive Moyo-Modise, the striker currently on loan from Rochdale.

The 19-year-old, who has received a South Africa under-21 call-up, scored both goals which earned Jason Beckford's side three valuable points in the clash involving the second and third bottom teams.

Mossley, with a badly depleted line-up, put further daylight between themselves and the two teams beneath them in the table.

Mossley reserve keeper Danny Trueman and Borough's Tim Dittmer both made decent early saves before the Lilywhites took a 20th minute lead when James Turley's delightful flick over the Borough defence released Moyo-Modise who found the net with a sweetly-struck low volley.

The only surprise was that Mossley did not have a bigger advantage at the break as Moyo-Modise had five clear-cut chances in the opening half.

Yet Borough could have finished on level terms as Ian Fitzpatrick's free kick from 25 yards crashed against the crossbar.

Mossley were under the cosh and Turley was forced to head off his own goalline shortly before the nervous home side sealed victory in the 70th minute.

Melford Knight and Steve Burke combined superbly to release Moyo-Modise who coolly lobbed the Borough keeper.

THE funeral took place yesterday of former Mossley president Norman Brooke who died at the age of 86 following a long illness.

Mr Brooke, who also served on the management committee in the 1980s, was from Lydgate and died in Tameside General Hospital.
