Mossley striker Peter Wright came off the bench to see the Lilywhites through to the second round of the Manchester Premier Cup against North West Counties League promotion hopefuls Salford City scoring the only goal 12 minutes from the end of a scrappy game.

Salford played like it was a big game for them and worked extremely hard to deny Mossley space, Mossley for their part played well within themselves but rarely looked threatened by their lively opponents.

Chances were few on a tricky Seel Park playing surface and the game was patchy at best.

Mossley’s class started to shine through in the second half as Salford began to tire and the introduction of Lee Shillito livened things up. Chris Ward and David Eyres both went close as did Melford Knight with a stunning drive.

Peter Wright made his appearance in the 77th minute replacing James Turley. With his very first touch he beat two Salford defenders before bringing a good save out of Salford keeper Barry George. Less than a minute later a sublime through ball from Ward saw Wright lob the ball over the stranded George and follow the ball into the net.

Salford made one last desperate effort and looked to have scored as Moores’ goal-bound close range effort looked set for the top corner but Danny Trueman found an extra stretch to brilliantly turn the ball around the post.
