The Lilywhites won the inaugural Frank Robinson Memorial Trophy with a close fought 1-0 win over Conference North neighbours Stalybridge Celtic.

Stalybridge played some good football in the opening stages and put Mossley's defence to the test but the home side's back four of Andy Thackeray, Terry Bowker, Danny White and Rob Edwards were in no mood to concede and with the help of a number great block tackles by the hard working Melford Knight the visitors were unable to fully test keeper Lee Bracey.

Mossley played most of the opening half on the break and teenager Steve Burke had Mossley's best chance but his shot lacked power and Buxton was able to save easily.

The visitors were however engaging in some strong arm tactics and Terry Bowker was on the end of an elbow from Celtic number 9 Hume that saw him receive a suspected broken nose in front of a pedantic but inevitably weak referee.

The game's only goal came in the 65th minute. Joe Shaw and Kenny Mayers linked up on the right of the box, Mayers forced his way past two tackles but his legs wewre taken as he was about to shoot only for the ball to break kindly for Chris Downey to tap home from close range.

The visitors huffed and puffed but Mossley finished the stronger despite losing Burke to a freak injury when he sommersaulted over the pitch surround at full pace and landed heavily.

Danny Trueman made his first appearance in the Mossley goal in the second half and he gave a confident and competent display but was barely troubled by a weak Celtic strikeforce.

Substitute Paul Garvey twice came close to extending the lead as Mossley finished the game in the ascendancy.
