Mossleyweb Man of the Match: Chris Hirst

Mossley suffered a second successive away defeat in the space of three days as they went down to a strong and mobile Skelmersdale United at Selby Place.

It was a game that wasn’t without controversy though. Mossley finished with ten men after team captain Daryl Weston was dismissed for a second yellow while Skelmersdale number 10 Robinson went unpunished, after having received an early yellow, his dangerous two footed lunge at Chris Middleton in the closing minutes of the first half got him no more than a brief talking to.

It has to be said though, that Skem were the better side on the night, pinging passes around with pace and confidence and opening the Mossley midfield and defence on too many occasions.

After Skem had created two early chances, both comfortably saved by Andy Robertson, Mossley took a shock 3rd minute lead. Christian Cooke’s raking long ball was misjudged by centre half White and keeper McMahon and Chris Hirst nipped between the two to round the keeper and fire home.

Skelmersdale continued to probe though and they finally equalised in the 26th minute when Kevin Towey scored at the second attempt after his initial effort had been blocked.

Neil Robinson fired home a cross from the right on 35 minutes to turn the advantage around, minutes later he should have received his marching orders for the challenge on Middleton.

Mossley manager Chris Willcock insensed by that terrible decision was ordered from the bench before a ball had been kicked in the second half for his justifiable remonstrations with referee Mr Bonney.

Mossley replaced Nathan Neequaye with Danny Toronczak at the interval and the big target man was unlucky not to score when his diving header was clawed away by McMahon.

Minutes later Mossley were reduced to ten men when Weston was dismissed before Skem scored their third goal in the 75th minute. Kyle Armstrong’s speculative shot took a fierce deflection and looped over the stranded Robertson.

Mossley reduced the arrears when White and McMahon were again on different wavelengths and Toronczak was able to square the ball for Chris Hirst to fire into an empty net to give ten man Mossley a glimmer of hope.
It wasn’t to be though. The industrious Chris Almond finally getting on the scoresheet in the 75th minute when he scored from close range after Mossley’s overworked defence had failed to deal with a corner.
