AFC Fylde are nick-named 'The Coasters' but it was Mossley who coasted to victory at a damp and windy Kellemargh Park with a thoroughly competent and convincing display against one of the promotion favourites.

Straight from the kick off Mossley were straight at their big spending opponents and never let them settle in a dominant opening 45 minutes.

Some of Mossley’s pass and move football was of the highest order and chances were carved out on a frequent basis.
Mike Fish, again outstanding and just about unplayable, twice went close. First with a flashing shot that fizzed just past the post and then with a header that rustled the side-netting.

Mike Oates and Lee Blackshaw also had chances to open the scoring as Fylde were left chasing shadows all over the perfect Kellemargh Park surface.

The opening goal seemed inevitable and it finally arrived in the 39th minute. Fish worked an opening on the right and played a neat one two off Blackshaw’s chest before chipping the ball up for the diminutive Chris Rowney to power home a header from eight yards. It was no less than rampant Mossley deserved.

The second period opened with Fylde going close for the first time in the game and they made spasmodic attempts on goal over the next ten minutes before Mossley killed the game and sealed the result on 58 minutes.

Daryl Weston, again a rock in midfield, played an incisive pass down the left touch line for Blackshaw. The Mossley winger then whipped in a low cross that substitute Mark Connor, on for the injured Oates, rifled home on the half volley from ten yards.

With the game now won, Fylde could find no way back as Mossley kept the ball well and still looked to forage forward at any opportunity while keeping a solid base at the back that saw keeper Peter Collinge relatively untroubled through the closing stages.

So, Mossley have finally got their League season underway and this result and the outstanding way in which it was achieved augers well for the forthcoming games.
