With the media frenzy surrounding the alleged appointment of Paul Gascoigne as Garforth Town manager it would have been easy for the Mossley players to be distracted.

The fact that Gazza didn’t show in the end made not one iota of difference except to the size of the crowd with Mossley enjoying their biggest home gate of the season so far and the Lilywhites completing their first home League victory of the season, thanks to s super Lee Blackshaw strike early in the second half.

The Lilywhites went into the game without the injured Daryl Weston with Aaron Chalmers taking his place while Luca Havern replaced Chalmers in the centre of defence. Steve Settle also returned to the side following the birth of his first child.

The game opened at a high tempo with both sides attacking at pace but it was the visitors who opened the scoring. Ben Small’s cross from the left was volleyed home at the far post by Chris Howarth despite Peter Collinge getting a full hand to the ball.

Bizarrely at that point Garforth stopped playing the passing game so evident in the early stages and resorting to humping the ball high and attempting to play on the break as Mossley’s pressure began to grow.

A minute before the interval Mossley found the equaliser when following heavy Mossley pressure left back Andy Villerman badly slice a clearance and the ball bounced in off the far post with keeper Lee Kelsey flapping at fresh air.

Shaun Higgins made two changes at the break. Havern was replaced by Connor Hampson with Chalmers returning to the back four while Danny Egan replaced Mike Fish who had been ’dead-legged’ in the first half.

It took Mossley just four minutes of the second half to take the lead when Lee Blackshaw hit a sweet 20 yard effort into the bottom corner giving Kelsey no chance.

Garforth attempted to press Mossley for an equaliser but it was Mossley who created the better chances throughout the remainder of the game and in the end were full value for the 2-1 victory.
