Skelmersdale United showed their promotion potential with a clinical win over a hard working Mossley side at Stormy Corner on Saturday.

Skem’s ability to keep possession and move the ball around at pace was the eventual undoing of a Mossley side who failed to take their chances while errors in midfield and defence cost them dearly.

The home side surged forward from the off and Mossley were given an early warning of what was to come when Matty McGinn fired a shot narrowly wide.

Mossley created a great early chance of their own but Chris Hall half volleyed over the bar from a great position.
The game ebbed and flowed through the first half with Skem shading possession and chances. Peter Collinge being the busier of the two keepers.

The game looked to be heading for a stalemate at the break when Skem opened the scoring practically on the half time whistle. Mossley needlessly lost possession in midfield, Skem broke quickly and Ryan Wade fired a great shot into the far corner that gave Collinge no chance.

Mossley pressed from the off in the second half but the closest they came to a goal was when Matty Kay’s free kick flew narrowly wide.

Skem doubled their lead and effectively ended the game as a contest in the 65th minute with a great strike by Southport loanee Matty McGinn after Mossley had again lost possession in midfield.

Peter Collinge continued his man of the match display with several very good saves to prevent further damage but was given no chance when Skem opened the Mossley defence again and Ryan Wade glanced home a header for his second of the afternoon.

Salt was rubbed in Mossley’s wounds in the final minutes when Mossley made a hash of clearing a corner and substitute Chris Almond was able to pick his spot to score.

It was a harsh result on hard working Mossley who at no point gave up chasing a goal, but you can’t afford to make so many unforced errors against a side of Skem’s quality without being punished and on this occasion Mossley were punished to the max.
