Mossley deservedly retained the Willowood Hospice Cup at Hurst Cross despite needing a penalty shoot out to seal the victory.

An even first half saw relatively few chances for either side though Peter Collinge was forced into an excellent one handed save to deny ex Mossley man Danny Egan while at the other end Steve Moore and Mike Oates were both denied by excellent blocks.

Ashton took the lead shortly before the break when Gareth Richards scored at the second attempt after Collinge had blocked his initial effort.

Mossley stepped up a gear after the break and started to ask some serious questions of the Ashton defence which did well to hold out with Mossley pressing high up the pitch and Mossley fully deserved the equaliser when it arrived in the 71st minute. Mike Fish chipping the ball over home keeper Terry Smith before rounding him to head home from close range.

Mossley stepped up another gear with Chris Rowney and Aaron Chalmers taking a complete grip of midfield and Steve Settle and Ben Richardson causing havoc down Mossley's right wing. Smith was called on to make excellent saves from Fish and Matty Kay and efforts from Richardson and Settle flew narrowly wide.

Ashton were forced to resort to the long ball game with ex FC United striker Aaron Burns often the intended target but Mossley held out well despite one scare when Chalmers had to clear a bouncing ball from near the line.

The game went to penalties without extra time and Aaron Chalmers stepped up to score the opening spot kick, Steele did the same for Ashton as did Mossley debutant Mark Connor. Ashton missed their next spot kick as Collinge saved well to his right. The remaining penalties by Steve Settle, Ben Richardson and Mike Fish were all comfortably converted and Mossley had won the penalty shoot out 5-3.
