Mossley put neighbours Trafford to the sword at a freezing cold Seel Park on Tuesday night scoring six top quality goals without reply against the hapless Mancunians.

Gone was the tardy finishing and sloppy defending so evident against Lancaster on Saturday and in it’s place was some clinical finishing and mean defending that left Trafford as second best throughout the game and returning home licking their wounds and nursing equally wounded collective egos.

Mossley got off to the perfect start with Callum Byrne firing home an unstoppable shot from outside the box in just the fourth minute to set Mossley on their way.

The goal gave Mossley the confidence to get their passing game together while Trafford were reduced to humping the ball forward in the hope of getting on the end of something. That they didn’t manage a shot of note throughout the 90 minutes gives great credit to skipper Graham Kay and his fellow defenders who were faultless all night, giving returning Oldham loanee keeper Josh Ollerenshaw the easiest farewell game he could imagine.

Mossley doubled the lead in the 19th minute. Mike Fish broke clear on the right and then pulled back an inch perfect pass to the edge of the box where Kristian Dennis, making his full Mossley debut, drove home powerfully and accurately.

Eight minutes later Ben Richardson added a third after beating off O’Connor’s challenge to score at the second attempt as his initial shot bounced straight back to him.

Callum Byrne continued to torment his former loan club with a very well taken fourth goal in the 31st minute as he slotted home from another perfect Fish pass.

Further chances were created by a Mossley side by now in cruise control but the fifth goal didn’t arrive until the 62nd minute. Substitute Mike Oates worked an opening on the left and and his cross was brilliantly fired home by Kristian Dennis for his second of the evening.

The scoring was completed by substitute Matty Kay in the 82nd minute when he controlled well and volleyed home after a neat interchange of passes around the Trafford box.

It could have been double figures in the end, such was Mossley’s dominance and try as they might Trafford were unable to find any kind of cohesion to their play and were quite simply pulled apart at the back by some scintillating and enterprising Mossley attacking play.

If the Lilywhites can now keep the momentum of this win going they will soon be showing up at the right end of the table and on this showing at least the signs are definitely there to be seen.
