Both
teams will be reasonably content with a point from a game
that was more or less dominated by dreadful weather conditions.
A wind and rain lashed Seel Park was not a place for fast
free flowing football on Saturday as both sides struggled
to come to grips with the conditions which made the game
hard going not just for the players but the 156 brave souls
who had come out to watch on such a dreadful afternoon.
Warrington were out of the blocks quickest though and the
game was barely two minutes old when the visitors notched
their only goal of the game.
Mossley failed to deal with a left wing corner and the ball
flew across the face of Peter Collinge’s goal only
to be returned at the far post for one time Mossley player
Gavin Salmon to volley home unmarked from eight yards.
Mossley gradually found their feet and dominated the remainder
of the first half with the strong wind at their backs without
creating many chances against a strong Warrington back line.
Welsh Semi Pro international keeper Paul Pritchard made
a great save to deny Kristian Dennis’ well driven
free kick but was mostly untroubled up to the Mossley which
equaliser came in the 27th minute. A sustained bout of Mossley
pressure ended with success when Mike Fish floated a cross
from deep on the left and the diminutive Chris Rowney flicked
home a header that entered the net at the far post.
The remainder of the game could best be described as a hard
slog. Warrington dominated the second period as Mossley
had the first as the strong wind made defensive clearances
extremely difficult and with the pitch cutting up due to
the heavy rain the quality of football deteriorated in equal
measure.
