A hard working and hungry Abbey hey side pulled off a shock result in beating Mossley at the Abbey Stadium on Tuesday night.

Off key Mossley struggled to find any fluency against a home side who worked incredibly hard to close down space and deny the Lilywhites any clear scoring opportunities.

Half chances came and went without a real threat to former Mossley keeper Jon McIlwaine's goal.

The only goal of the game came in the 34th minute when former Mossley trialist Johnny Hardy found himself in space in the middle and his low drive squirmed through embarrassed Mossley keeper Martin Pearson's legs.

It could have got worse for Mossley a few minutes later when hardy headed home a whipped cross from the left but Hardy was flagged off-side.

The introduction of Kayde Coppin and Alex Byrne for the sceond half gave Mossley more impetus and the Lilywhites, without finding anything like real form, started to create more openings.

Coppin, Byrne, Lee Rick, Dave McNiven and Danny Queeley all might have equalised but some desperate last ditch defending and solid keeping by McIlwaine kept Mossley at bay.
