Mossley held their own against near full strength League One neighbours Oldham Athletic in Tuesday evening's Seel Park Centenary match and were in the end a little unfortunate to lose to the only goal of the game.

It was Mossley who created the first chance of the game when in the 2nd minute the lively Kayde Coppin broke down the right and whipped in a cross that Dave McNiven headed narrowly wide.

Debutant Mossley keeper Russ Saunders then had to be alert to tip over Paul Black's deflected cross and Saunders reacted equally well to tip over a shot by Kirk Millar soon after.

Oldham took the lead on 16 minutes when Oldham's trialist striking pair combined up the middle with their speedy trialist centre forward getting to the ball a fraction before the onrushing Saunders to prod home from the edge of the box.

Latics left winger Chris Taylor then headed narrowly over and their trialist defender headed against the top of the bar as Oldham finished the half well.

After Oldham had wasted a couple of half chances early in the second period Mossley began to threaten and Coppin was unlucky to see his powerful effort hit the side netting.

Oldham's trialist keeper then did well to deny Harry Noon's goalbound effort. Joe Heap then merrily danced around a static Oldham rearguard but his goalbound shot hit an unaware Oldham defender and was deflected to safety as Mossley enjoyed a spell of pressure. The Lilywhites also had the last chance of the game on 85 minutes but Jordan Cuff's shot flew narrowly wide.
