Mossley's hopes of gaining a positive result out of the season’s opening match at Ossett Town were shattered in the 73rd minute when Ossett substitute Andrew Catton rifled home a stupendous 30 yard screamer from a harshly awarded free kick.

Up to that point Mossley had been the most threatening team and the only one trying to play passing football.
Ossett were big, experienced and direct and not surprisingly won the aerial battle while physically stifling Mossley’s more considered approach.

The game opened badly for Mossley when Senior found too much space on Mossley’s left and his cross was easily dispatched from ten yards by the surprisingly unmarked Kevin Sanasy.

Mossley’s response was almost instant. Lee Rick switched play with a brilliant angled cross-field ball to Kayde Coppin on the right wing. The tricky Mossley wide man skipped clear and crossed for debutant Scott Hogan to force the ball home from close range.

Both sides were hampered when an 18th minute clash of heads between Nick Swirad and Ossett’s Niall O’Brien saw the game halted for five minutes with both injured players being substituted. Rob Flint replacing the concussed Swirad for Mossley.

Mossley dominated the remainder of the half, creating a number of chances and half chances with Coppin tormenting his marker on the right wing while Hogan and strike partner Scott Barlow were constantly probing in and around the home box.

Hogan ought to have doubled his tally just before half time when clean through but Dickinson did well to turn away his effort.

With the pronounced slope in their favor in the second half Ossett were a different proposition with high balls constantly played into the Mossley box as Ossett played the percentage game.

With Ossett’s defense now shored up, openings became rare for the Lilywhites and a draw was starting to look the fairest result. That was until that fateful 73rd minute free kick award. Rob Flint was harshly penalized when winning a header and up stepped Catton to break Mossley’s hearts.

Mossley lost Cavell Coo through injury a couple of minutes later to be replaced by Mark Innes.
Following the goal Ossett resorted to some blatant time wasting which included hoofing the ball into the corners and taking an age to take any set pieces or throw ins. The referee finally losing patience with the home team and Milne was yellow carded after spending more than 30 seconds deciding who he should throw the ball to.

Mossley then set up the best move of the match with five players involved in moving the ball from defense to attack at speed before Coppin saw his sizzling goal-bound shot strike a defender and deflect to safety.

Mossley threw Steve Halford up front in the closing stages but without reward and Mossley will reflect on what might have been had they made more of their first half dominance.
