Mossley manager Steve Halford made a large number of changes from the side that played Oldham on Wednesday as the Lilywhites entertained a Burnley development squad which included four players with first team experience.

It was a far more encouraging performance by the Lilywhites although from Mossley’s perspective it wasn’t the greatest of starts as the home side fell behind in only the third minute.

Burnley won a right wing corner and the ball was whipped in well for left winger Joe Jackson to powerfully head home from eight yards.

Mossley looked to be in trouble as Burnley moved the ball about at pace and created a couple more openings which saw Martin Pearson called into action.

The Lilywhites finally settled into the game and debutant front two Gavin Salmon and Cayne Hanley caused problems for the Burnley defence with Hanley going close to opening his account on a couple of occasions.

At the other end McCarten came close to doubling the visitors lead when his effort came back off the foot of the post and was cleared to safety.

Burnley keeper Mitchell was then called into action making a splendid save to deny Mossley’s former Huddersfield Town wing back Shane Birtles who hit a rasping shot from near 30 yards.

Mossley made several substitutions at the break and looked more threatening as the second half got under way.
The pace, power and movement of the Mossley forward line now augmented by former Leeds United junior Lutel Williams caused consternation in the Burnley defence.

Burnley held out though despite a nervy display by young substitute keeper Jakovlevs. Mossley were unlucky not to equalise when Williams’ powerful header thundered against the bar from a pinpoint Mark Haslam cross.

Burnley sealed the win with eight minutes remaining. The highly rated Wes Fletcher, who had been superbly marshalled by Mossley man of the match Dave Young throughout the game, finally found an inch of room and he took full advantage as a quick turn gave him the opportunity to slot the ball past Mossley sub keeper Xavier Parisi from ten yards.

Expect more changes to the Mossley line up in the coming games as Steve Halford looks at more trialists as he seeks to build a competitive side for the coming campaign.
