Mossley came away from a windswept Kirklands with a hard earned and well deserved point on Saturday when drawing 1-1 against last season’s play off rivals Cammell Laird.

Lairds; big, direct and physical are a tough nut to crack on their own meadow and so it proved as both sides slogged it out in front of one of the smallest crowds ever gathered for an Evo-stik League game that attracted a mere 36 paying customers.

With first use of the wind advantage the home side opened brightly and applied some early pressure that waned as Mossley slowly but surely gained a foothold in the game.

However, chances were few as the strong end to end wind made good football very difficult.
Mossley defended solidly with left back Andy Brown and central defender Tom Dean particularly outstanding in a well drilled Mossley back line.

It was however, Lairds who made the first breakthrough in the 27th minute. A deep cross from the right was deflected into the path of Jamie Henders who bundled the ball home from close range from a suspiciously off-side looking position.

The goal almost instantly roused Mossley who were level within two minutes. Tom Pratt broke into the box from the left and was pulled backwards to the floor by Danny O’Brien for a clear penalty. Top scorer Dougie Carroll, recalled to mthe starting line up due to Wayne Welbeck’s injury, stepped up to send Lairds keeper Langley the wrong way from the resulting spot kick. Both sides defended solidly thereafter and chances were severely limited.

The second half saw Mossley with the wind advantage but like in the first period chances were few. Dougie Carroll saw his 20 yard drive fumbled to safety by Langley and substitute Brian Matthews, on for the injured Tom Pratt, headed narrowly over the bar from Richard Bennett’s cross.

At the other end Russ Saunders gathered well from Henders’ shot. Both sides had late half chances but in honesty the draw was the fairest result.

Good news for Mossley was the return by broken leg victim John Bennett who made a 10 minute cameo at the end of the game.
