Mossley gave a terrific second half performance to deservedly take maximum points against Yorkshire rivals Farsley at Seel Park in Saturday’s final game of the 2013/14 season.

The game was won with a fine goal by half time substitute Richard Bennett just three minutes from the end of an entertaining game that saw the Lilywhites grow in confidence as the match wore on.

Farsley were disappointing on the day, creating few chances. Having said that they could well have been suffering a hangover from just failing to make the play offs.

Mossley carved several chances in the first half with Tom Pratt coming closest when he rounded the keeper but was unable to find the target from a sharp angle. Farsley keeper Taylor was in good foirm and did well to push away Brian Matthews stinging drive and also to save with outstretched leg from another Tom Pratt effort.

Farsley’s first real chance of the game came early in the second period when Chris Thewlis dived to save Priestley’s on target effort but Mossley’s on form back four otherwise comfortably repelled Farsley’s advances.

Pratt was twice denied by Taylor while John Bennett fired over after some super approach play.

All the action was around the Farsley box and a goalless draw was beginning to look a likely outcome. That was until a sparkling goal in the 87th minute finally brought the curtain down on what has been a season of gradual rebuilding after the traumas of last summer.

Andy Brown raced down the left wing after some free-flowing Mossley play and the lively left back held the ball up perfectly on the dead ball line before pulling back to Richard Bennett who stroked a fine shot into the far corner from the left angle of the box for what proved to be a deserved winning goal.

Mossley might have added a second but Taylor just about got a hand to Charlie Anderson’s 25 yard whipped free kick. But there was no denying the Lilywhites victory.

Peter Band and Lloyd Morrison have built a young and enthusiastic team that shows real promise. With the addition of two or three more experienced players over the closed season could well see the Lilywhites challenging at the right end of the table in the 2014/15 season.
