Bereft of the suspended trio of Andy Keogh, Kyle McGonigle and Michael Thomas, Mossley looked anything but a side fighting for a play off place as they were well beaten by title chasers Warrington Town at Cantilever Park.

Christmas cheer was in short supply for the travelling Mossley fans who witnessed their team alarmingly concede four goals from set pieces against a big and direct Warrington side.

Recently signed central defender Andy Fitzgerald came into the side for his debut as did midfielder Callum Warburton who was named on the bench.

The damage started in the tenth minute when Alex McQuade peeled off at the back post from a right wing corner to head home from an unmarked position.

Mossley were able to make few inroads as Warrington closed down space quickly and were sharper top the second ball.

The Lilywhites did however have a couple of first half chances. Sam Robinson had his close range effort somehow cleared off the line and Tom Pratt saw his shot from a narrow angle fly narrowly wide of the far post.

Warrington doubled their lead on the stroke of half time from another right wing corner, this time in controversial circumstances. The corner was played short to Chris Gahgan who’s shot was heading wide before big target man Ben Deegan turned the ball home with the Mossley players vociferously claiming that Deegan had handled the ball into the net.

Warrington added a third goal on 52 minutes when Daniel O’Donnell headed home from another Warrington corner to end the game as a contest.

Warrington added a fourth when Ciaran Kilheeney took full advantage of a slip and went through to slot the ball past the advancing Liam Flynn.

The scoring was completed when Mossley once again conceded from a corner kick. Ben Deegan scoring his second of the match at the far post.

Mossley’s best chance of the second half saw Sam Robinson fire into the side netting after taking the ball around home keeper Karl Wills.

The Lilywhites suffered a further blow with 10 minutes remaining when Tom Dean was helped off the field with a calf injury leaving Mossley to complete the game with ten men having already used all of their allowed substitutions.

A massive improvement is needed as we enter the busy holiday period with vital games against Glossop, Droylsden and Ossett Town in quick succession.

The good news is that Keogh and Thomas have both now completed their bans and McGonigle will miss only one further game.
