In a game arranged at short notice current FA Trophy holders FC Halifax Town arrived on the back of an 8-1 success at Brighouse Town in their match while Mossley were playing their first game of the pre season.
Mossley gave a good account of themselves in the early stages but neither side created much in the final third. Mossley came closest to opening the scoring when Town keeper Steve Drench made a superb reflex save to keep out Dougie Carroll's effort.
Halifax finally built up a spell of pressure and took the lead on 23 minutes when the livewire Matty Kosylo rifled in a powerful shot which Mossley's trialst keeper could only palm into the path of Richard Peniket who scored from close range.
The keeper befell a similar fate three minutes later when the visitors doubled their advantage. This time ex Mossley youth teamer Jake Hibbs was the recipient for anotyher close range finish.
Both sides made numerous substitutions at the break and Mossley thought they had scored when the substitute right sided striker saw his shot deflected into the net but the referee spotted an offence and the goal was chalked off.
The game moved quickly from end to end and both sides created half chances but Halifax proved the more clinical and with the game very stretched in the closing stages the visitors added two more late goals as substitutes Sharez Khan and Elliot Harrison gave the scoreline a more flattering look in the visitors favour.
