Missed chances and mistakes again came back to haunt Mossley in the Boxing Day local ‘derby’ at Glossop North End as the home side edged to a 3-2 win in a game that was more or less destroyed as a spectacle by a very strong end to end wind.

Mossley were hampered by an injury to Jason Hill in the warm ups meaning a quick call up for Kyle McGonigle.

With first advantage of the wind Mossley created a couple of half chances but were ht when Glossop scored with their first serious attack on 15 minutes. A throw in on Mossley’s left wing found it’s way to Mike Norton who powered into the box before squaring for Max Leonard who was left with a simple tap in.

The Lilywhites created the majority of chances in the opening period. Tom Dean headed narrowly over from a great position while home keeper Matt Cooper made fine saves to deny Mike Fish, Andy Keogh and Kyle McGonigle. However, the hosts held on to the single goal advantage at the break.

Despite playing into the wind, Mossley were level within five minutes of the restart. Matty Burke’s through ball saw Tom Pratt race clear only to be brought down in the box by Mo Ali and Mike Fish stepped up to hammer home from the penalty spot.

Mossley’s joy was short lived as Glossop went straight up the other and won a corner which saw Leonard score his second with a pin point header at the far post.

Worse was to follow as the Lilywhites were hit on the break a few minutes later. McGonigle’s sliced free kick saw Glossop raid quickly and despite Bulmer making a fine save to deny Norton, ex Mossley player Ben Richardson followed up to score the rebound and put the homesters 3-1 up.

A double substitution saw Dave Short and Dougie Carroll replace Burke and Sam, Robinson and the pair combined to give the Lilywhites some hope late ion the game. Short fired the ball across the six yard box from the left and Carroll was on hand to score from six yards.

It was too little too late for Mossley and Glossop were able to see out the surprisingly short amount of stoppage time to take the points and the local bragging rights.
