Missed chances, disallowed goals, a red card, a generally poor performance and a disappointing result - that would be a fair summary of Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat against a lively and direct Ossett Town side at Seel Park on Saturday.

With all eleven of the clubs junior teams along with their families and team coaches in attendance it would have been hoped that the first team would rise to the occasion on a dry and breezy afternoon.

However, it was a lethargic Lilywhites lacking real confidence, who saw the visitors make all the early running.

Despite Ossett’s busy performance, chances for either side were just about zero until Mossley had their first opening some twenty minutes in but Mike Fish’s header went just wide of the right hand post.

It was mere moments later that the visitors took the lead. An incisive raid down Mossley’s right saw Ashley Jackson’s cross powerfully headed home by the diving Devonte Morton.

Mossley looked to have equalised a few minutes later but Ossett keeper Leigh Overton made a stunning reaction save to keep out Jordan Bove’s effort.

Going in a goal down at the break, it would have been hoped that Mossley would take the game to their visitors in the second half. There was plenty of huff and puff about the Lilywhites but regular off-side flags were raised against them. Particularly when twice finding the Ossett Town net. Firstly Jordan Bove’s effort was ruled out as he was set up by Mike Fish and substitute Dave Short suffered the same fate when he got on the end of Andy Keogh’s header.

Ossett doubled their lead with their first shot of the second half on 70 minutes as Anthony Mackie scored at the far post as Mossley’s defence got caught off guard.

Worse was to follow five minutes later as John Bennett was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on an Ossett player and despite a late rally by the Lilywhites they were unable to find a way past the Ossett defence.
