Mossley returned to winning ways at Seel Park on Saturday as a goal in each half by Liam Ellis was enough to secure the points with a 2-0 victory over in form Prescot Cables.

The Lilywhites were the better side throughout but were thankful for a goal-line clearance by Jamie McLellan to prevent the visitors taking an early lead.

Tom Dean came close to giving Mossley the advantage but he saw his header from a right wing corner crash against the woodwork.

After being denied by several contentious off-side decisions the Lilywhites took a deserved lead on 25 minutes. Elliot Harrison hit a raking through ball into the path of Liam Ellis who calmly raced around keeper Marcus Burgess to slot home from the left angle.

The second half saw Mossley well in charge as Prescot attacks were easily stifled and three times Prescot had to clear the ball off their own goal-line to deny efforts by Harrison, Ellis and Mason Duffy.

The match clinching goal came on 81 minutes. Mason Duffy raced clear on the right and crossed low for Liam Ellis to score from close range at the second attempt after Burgess had blocked his initial effort.

Substitute Jamie Matthews almost added a third goal but his dipping effort took a deflection to fly just over the bar.

Prescot had the ball in the Mossley net with five minutes remaining but were denied by an off-side flag to ensure a clean sheet.
