Mossley went out of the Buildbase FA Trophy at the first hurdle when going down 3-1 at in-form Cleethorpes Town on Saturday.

The Lilywhites recalled Mike Fish and Adam Jones to the side following injury with Keenan Quansah and Logan Jeffs dropping to the bench.

The game couldn’t have started worse for Mossley. Playing into a strong wind and facing the low Autumn sun, the Lilywhites conceded within two minutes of the start. Josh Batty latched onto Oli Donald’s through ball to shoot low into the bottom corner.

Cleethorpes long ball game caused Mossley lot’s of problems as the home side’s pacey front three threatened to get in behind the Mossley defence on several occasions.

Elliot Harrison had Mossley’s first chance but after a good run from midfield he screwed his shot wide. Adam Jones then saw his powerful header turned away for a corner by home keeper Parkin.

However it was the home side who pressed home their advantage on 23 minutes when some neat interplay found Jonathan Oglesby in acres of space and the hot shot winger made no mistake firing home from the edge of the box.

Mossley tied hard to get back into the game and Cleethorpes survived a mad scramble in their box with several efforts blocked near the line and Mossley had a big shout for a penalty for handball but their appeals were waved away.

Mossley were far from out of the game at Half time with the elements in their favour in the second half but were hit again barely three minutes into the half when Josh Batty raced clear from a seemingly off-side position to round the Mossley keeper before slotting home.

The Lilywhites were left with a mountain to climb but despite edging the game in the possession stakes they were largely unable to trouble Dylan Parkin’s goal.

Finally, with five minutes remaining Mossley gained a faint lifeline. Substitute Keenan Quansah’s cross field ball found Izzy Miranda who freed Max Leonard down the left and his cross was hooked home by Ben Halfacre from eight yards.

However, it was too little too late for Mossley who struggled to get out of second gear throughout the game as the home side proved worthy winners on the day, collecting the £2,000 prize money and a place in the next round at the Lilywhites expense.
