Mossley’s unbeaten start to the season came to an abrupt end in heartbreaking fashion at Trafford on Tuesday night when the Lilywhites lost to a goal with just about the last kick of the game.

The Lilywhites were without five regular starters from the line up with Adam Jones and Dieter Downey suspended, Mike Fish and Godwin Abadaki injured and Andy Keogh unavailable. So there were impressive full debuts for Steve Mason and Izzy Miranda and a first start of the season for Logan Jeffs in a reshuffled Lilywhites line up.

It was a game dominated by defences with little more than half chances for either side throughout the contest.

The best of the first half opportunities saw Trafford’s Ally Brown twice denied by comfortable saves by Jonny Diba Musangu and a Matty Bryan effort that the Mossley stopper claimed at the second attempt.
At the other end Ben Halfacre saw his snap shot well saved by Matt Cooper and Max Leonard’s effort just before the break curled an inch wide of the far post with Cooper beaten.

The second half was more open with both sides enjoying spells of pressure but again defences were dominant.

As the game entered it’s closing moments Mossley looked the more likely winner as a couple of long throws and a Ben Richardson corner caused consternation in the home defence with Cooper doing well to save Mossley’s late chance.

However, with the game just clearing the three minutes added time Mossley carelessly lost possession in midfield and Matty Bryan raced down Mossley’s right wing and his low cross was bundled home from close range by giant centre forward Mark Derbyshire, much to Trafford’s delight and Mossley’s despair.

Substitute Matty Kay attempted to shoot directly from the restart but the final whistle sounded while the ball was still in the air and the point that Mossley just about deserved was lost.
