Mossley made the long trip for a first ever visit to Pickering Town on Tuesday evening and despite almost totally dominating the game managed to go down to a shock 3-2 defeat against previously point-less opposition.

Due to suspensions and unavailability the Mossley side showed a number of changes from the previous outing. Keeper Josh Ollerenshaw made his first appearance of the season while Chiekh Thiam started a game for the first time with the side lining up in an unexpected 3-5-2 formation.

The hosts took a ninth minute lead when a long ball split the Mossley defence and Flynn McNaughton chipped the ball into an empty net as Ollerenshaw got his angles all wrong.

Chances came and went for Mossley who were playing some good football but without the hoped for quality at the end of it.

The referee somehow found over five minutes stoppage time at the end of the first half and the final one of those the home side doubled their lead. Mossley failed to deal with a left wing corner and Flynn McNaughton grabbed his second goal with a deft overhead flick from eight yards.

Jes Uchegbulam replaced Thiam at the break and Mossley went on the serious offensive. Adam Morgan fired over from a good position and Dieter Downey did likewise soon after. Max Leonard fired wide and Uchegbulam had an effort cleared off the line.

Mossley finally got on the scoresheet in the 63rd minute. Andy Keogh’s through ball found Jes Uchegbulam who rounded the advancing keeper before slotting into a empty net.

Sensing their chance Mossley pressed again but a Pickering breakaway saw Mossley concede a free kick deep on the right wing, The cross to the far post saw George Bissett head home a simple goal to restore the two goal cushion.

Mossley continued to press forward with Uchegbulam causing the home defence all kinds of problems. Adam Jones had a header cleared off the line, Morgan hit the bar, Leonard again went very close with a powerful drive and Uchegbulam’s cross-shot narrowly evaded Morgan at the far post as Mossley threw the proverbial kitchen sink.

The Lilywhites were finally being rewarded two minutes from time when Adam Jones shot from 20 yards was fumbled over the line by the home keeper but it was too little too late and Pickering held on for their first points of the season.
