Behind closed doors Mossley went down to a solitary goal defeat at Widnes’ soulless Halton Stadium after having a last minute equaliser controversially disallowed.

Mossley had two early chances through Uchegbulam but the lively winger fired over the bar the bar on both occasions before Widnes saw their first shot in anger from Kyle Samber come back off the bar.

Both keepers were tested as the game wore on but it was Widnes who finally made the breakthrough six minutes after the interval when on loan Salford City player Matthew Sargent hit a speculative 25 yarder that flew past Lovell’s despairing dive into the top corner of the Mossley net.

The game swung from end to end as Mossley went in search of an equaliser and as the game entered stoppage time Mossley thought they had it. Keeper Lovell took a free kick from just inside Mossley’s half. His flighted ball saw home keeper Cemeron Terry flap at it and a clearly onside Kane Hickman glanced home a close range header. However, much to Mossley’s anguish, the assistant’s flag was raised for off-side and Mossley were robbed of a deserved equal share of the points by the official’s clear error.
