Mossley have signed central defender Jonathon 'Smudger' Smith on a free transfer from Conference North club Barrow.

Born in Darwen, Smith (30) began his non league career with his hometown club Darwen in the North West Counties League. He then moved into the Unibond League with Great Harwood Town before joining Accrington Stanley in the summer of 1999.

He was a regular for Stanley before joining Barrow on loan in August 2004. He was recalled from his second month's loan by Accrington in early September '04.

Smith was released by Accrington Stanley in May 2005 and soon after signed for Barrow on a permanent basis. Also went to Radcliffe Borough on a months loan in February 2006.
