Arthur W. C. Daniels signed for his home town club in 1920 after briefly playing for a works team in Salford scoring 2 goals in 18 Mossley appearances in the 1920/21 season.
Described as a "shrewd and speedy left-winger", he was transferred to Manchester City for a £100 fee in 1921 and played in the Football League for Manchester City (31-1), Watford (136-16) and Queens Park Rangers (14-3).
Daniels made his first team debut for Manchester City against Tottenham Hotspur in a First Division match in March 1923. He provided the cross for Manchester City's only goal in a 3–1 defeat, leading the Manchester Guardian to describe him as "the best forward in the line".
He proceeded to play a further nine consecutive matches, but this proved to be his longest run in the team, and he spent most of the next three seasons in the reserves.
He scored one goal for the club, a late consolation in a 4–2 defeat at Bolton in February 1925.In total he made 32 appearances for the Manchester club.
Daniels left Manchester City in 1926, and joined Watford, of the Third Division South.

Daniels was ever-present for Watford during the 1927–28 season, and continued to play regularly for the remainder of his time there.
He left Watford to join Queens Park Rangers in 1930, before departing the club at the end of the 1930–31 season.

Mossley (216-35)
Tall and lanky, Jackie Darley was a very tricky winger who’s favourite trick was to knock the ball one side of his marker and quickly run around the other side.
He signed for Mossley as early as 1911 from Mossley Methodists playing for the Lilywhites when they were still in the Ashton & District League. He returned to the club after World War I and signed professional forms in 1919 when Mossley joined the Cheshire League as founder members and helped the club to runners up spot in the League and the following season scored in a 2-1 replay win over Sandbach Ramblers in the League Cup Final replay at Winsford. A big fans favourite and something of a local celebrity in his day he was considered by many to be the best winger in the county, refusing offers on several occasions to join bigger clubs, preferring to play for his home town team.
He remained a regular in the team until his retirement through injury in 1925, making his final appearance and scoring against Manchester North End on 20th December 1924 as a persistent back problem finally became too much and he was forced to hang up his boots.

He made 45 appearances in York's first team as a midfield player between 1981 and 1983 before signing for Scarborough where he helped the Yorkshire coast club to the Conference title and promotion to the Football League.
He then played for Frickley Athletic, Boston United, Goole Town, Chorley and Northwich Victoria. Dawson then had a spell as manager at Bridlington Town before arriving at Mossley as player-manager in August 1994.
His spell in charge at Seel Park was short and completely disastrous.
He was in charge for 14 games. Eight League games of which Mossley lost seven and drew one, and six cup games of which the Lilywhites managed to win two.
Following a 0-1 home defeat by Radcliffe Borough on the 8th October 1994 Richard Dawson's spell at Mossley was ended by mutual consent with Mossley placed at the bottom of the UniBond League Division One.
Dawson had signed a number of Yorkshire based players who were evidently not good enough and they all left within a couple of weeks of Dawson's departure.

Born in Mossley on 21st September 1896. Died 1952
He started his career as an amateur with Ashton PSA and he continued playing at that level for Denton FC and then the army until the outbreak of the First World War.
During the hostilities he turned out for the Birkenhead Comets FC and Tranmere Rovers.
In March 1919 he signed for Stalybridge Celtic and after spending just two months with the club Blackburn Rovers snapped him up.
Things didn’t work out for him at Ewood Park and by February 1920 he was back at Stalybridge and he thought that was the end of his Football League career.
He must have been as surprised as anyone when in May 1923 he signed for Manchester United.
However, once again he struggled for regular first team football at League level and he made just 3 League appearances without scoring before leaving Old Trafford in February 1924.
His next port of call was Chesterfield and it was from Saltergate that he joined Wigan Borough in May 1928.
During his first season at Borough (1928/29) he helped the club into fourth place in the Third Division North and at one stage it seemed as though the club would win promotion to the old Second Division.
His last season was a disaster and the club finished in 18th place amid horrendous financial circumstances.
He joined Macclesfield Town in May 1930 and after one season there he signed for Hurst in July 1931.
He wound up his career as trainer for his hometown club Mossley and came out of retirememnt to make one appearance in the 1934/35 season.

Loan spells at Woking, Cheltenham Town and Wakefield followed but he didn't make the first team breakthrough at Huddersfield and was released in June 2010 and re-signed for Wakefield, finishing as their top scorer in 2010/11. Finished 2011/12 as Mossley's top scorer with 13 goals scored in only 22 appearances.
Signed for Alfreton Town in the close season of 2012 but was transferred for a fee to Worksop Town in December 2012.

Phil Derbyshire was signed by Bob Murphy from Manchester Amateur League side Avro in February 1981 after having previous experience as a junior at Manchester City and a spell with Stalybridge Celtic as a teenager.
He initially came into the side as a speedy right winger and made an immediate impression with his lightning pace and crossing and shooting ability, making his Mossley debut as a substitute in a 3-0 win over Macclesfield Town on 14th February 1981.
He was also utilised as a right wing back by Murphy and scored his first goal in the last game of the 1980-81 season, a late winner in a 3-2 victory over Worksop Town.
It was the 1981-82 season that saw Derbyshire find his scoring boots and he was top scorer with 16 goals in a Mossley attack that saw the goals shared with Davey Moore, Billy Hughes and Tibor Szabo. Mossley finished runners up in the NPL that season and again the following term when he was again leading scorer, this time netting 18 goals alongside Szabo and Mal Wagstaffe as Mossley again finished League runners up.
Derbyshire also featured in the FA Cup 1st Round game at Huddersfield Town which saw Mossley unlucky to go down 1-0 to their illustrious Pennine neighbours.
Derbyshire was selected several times to play for the Northern Premier League representative team and also appeared for the FA XI in representative games before becoming the third Mossley player in successive seasons to be selected to play for the England Semi Pro team (nowadays known as England C) as he played against Holland and Scotland in the 1983 Semi Pro International Tournament held at Scarborough FC.
Derbyshire made a total 124 appearances for Mossley scoring 35 goals before an error with his contract at the end of the 1982/83 season saw Mossley unable to ask a fee for his services.
He then moved up to the Conference and had a successful spell with Altrincham before joining Stafford Rangers in 1985 where he went on to become the leading NPL scorer in the 1987/88 season.
Derbyshire then moved to Macclesfield Town for a fee of £6.000 in August 1988 and he went on to score 19 goals in 61 games over two seasons with the Moss Rose club before retiring from the game in 1990.

He progressed through the youth set up at Rochdale making his first team debut in 2016.
He had loans spells with FC United of Manchester and Glossop North End during his time with 'dale.
He made 23 appearances for Mossley over two seasons before he was 'sine die' by the FA due to safeguarding issues.
In June 2021, Diba pleaded not guilty to three counts of raping a child under 13, three counts of rape, two counts of sexually assaulting a child under 13, two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and three counts of sexual activity with a child. Diba did, however, plead guilty to a further charge of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
Following a four-week trial, Diba was found guilty of raping and sexually abusing six girls and a woman over a five-year period. Upon being found guilty, Diba fell to his knees and cried loudly. The hearing had to be paused whilst court staff carried him from the room.
On 24 September 2021, Diba was jailed for 24 years with an extended licence period of four years.

Born South Elmsall 6th March 1942, Leonard Dickenson was a crafty goalscoring inside forward.
He signed professional for Sheffield Wednesday in February 1960 but didn’t make the first team at Hillsborough and moved to Oldham Athletic for a £100 fee in June 1961. He then made just 5 League appearances for Oldham before being released and stepping into no-league with Witton Albion
A season with Altrincham followed in 1962-63 where he scored 22 goals he was surprisingly released at the end of the season by then Alty manager Charlie Mitten.
From there he joined Buxton before he arrived at Don Wilson’s Mossley in January 1966. He made 19 appearances for Mossley scoring 6 goals in the 1965-66 season but started to come into his own in the season’s that followed.
He became team captain and made 44 appearances scoring 6 goals in 1966-67, 39 appearances scoring 13 goals in 1967-68, he was top scorer with 23 goals from 48 appearances in 1968-69.
Season 1969-70 was probably the pinnacle of Lennie Dickenson’s Mossley career. He led the team to runners up in the Cheshire League, Mossley’s best position for 50 years, the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup where Mossley lost unluckily in a replay to Stockport County and the Quarter Finals of the inaugural FA Trophy making 51 appearances and scoring 17 goals in that memorable season.
1970-71 saw Dickenson make 53 appearances scoring 17 goals and 1971-72 – Mossley’s last in the Cheshire League he made 51 appearances and scored just 2 goals but won the Club’s first ‘Player of the Year’ award – The Gilbert Tarr Trophy in 1972 as Mossley stepped up to the Northern Premier League.
Mossley’s first NPL season saw the departure of manager Don Wilson in November and Dickenson was extremely disappointed not to get the job and after making 30 appearances scoring 7 goals in the 1972-73 season he left Seel Park in December 1972 and returned to Altrincham.
Dickenson made a total of 338 appearances for Mossley and scored 84 goals.
At Altrincham he became team captain and inspiration to a side that would put Altrincham on the map. He had five good seasons at Moss Lane, even acting as caretaker manager along with Tommy Spratt prior to Tony Sanders’ appointment.
He made 212 appearances in his second stint at Moss lane and scored 31 goals.
Spells with Chorley and Leek Town followed and a brief spell as assistant manager at Droylsden to Alex Stepney, but Dickenson surprisingly never became a manager as many people had expected.
One remarkable fact about the fantastic footballer that was Lennie Dickenson was that he was sighted in only one eye.

Born in Lanark, Scotland on 19th July 1925. Died in Tynemouth on 19th February 2013.
John Dennis Downie wasa forward who became Manchester United's most expensive player. Downie was an irrepressibly cheery player, as adept at creating goals as hitting the net himself. John Downie was the costliest footballer in Manchester United history when he arrived at Old Trafford from Bradford Park Avenue in March 1949.
Though his £18,000 fee sounds like chicken feed by modern standards, it represented a huge sum in March 1949 to a club with recent experience of poverty and still recovering from the wartime shelling of their ground by German bombers. But Downie, an irrepressibly cheery little Scottish inside-forward, as adept at creating goals for his colleagues as hitting the net himself, was reckoned to be worth every penny of his price, which was nearly three times the previous highest paid by the club.
Downie had excelled at Bradford alongside his extravagantly gifted friend, the flamboyant England international Len Shackleton, and was seen as the ideal replacement for the feisty Mancunian Johnny Morris, who had just bade farewell to Old Trafford after a sharp difference of opinion with the manager, Matt Busby. But although he made a significant contribution to United's League championship of 1951/52, the first of Busby's reign, and certainly could not be regarded as a flop overall, Downie never went close to emulating the magnificent Morris.
The principal problem was the lofty level of expectation from supporters who had loved the departed local boy as one of their own. While the Scot was pacy and plucky with a sharp football intelligence, a deft finisher and a smooth distributor with either foot, he did not equal the consistent all-round excellence of the more self-assured Morris.
Poignantly, the consensus of opinion among his more astute team- mates was that Downie never realised what an exceptional talent he possessed.
Frequently he performed incandescently in training, dribbling past some of the most formidable defenders in the land as if they were so many lamp-posts, before laying off a slick pass or striking a spectacular goal.
Sometimes on match-days, however, he would dither over his decision-making, surrendering possession limply instead of applying the killer touch of which he was so manifestly capable. Downie was employed as a wartime "Bevin Boy" at Fryston Colliery, near Castleford, when he crossed the border from his Lanarkshire home to join Second Division Bradford as a 19-year-old part-timer in 1944; he turned fully professional after the conflict.
Soon he was attracting attention from a posse of top-flight clubs, all seeking to re-stock their squads after the depredations of the war, and when Busby pipped his rivals, he believed he had acquired the ideal replacement for Morris. The newcomer averaged approximately a goal every three games as he helped United to First Division runners-up spots in both 1948/49 and 1950/51, before they finally captured the League crown a season later. It was an acceptable return as he also contributed numerous assists to senior marksmen Jack Rowley and Stan Pearson; yet throughout that sequence he was dropped periodically, Busby believing that he wasn't quite fulfilling his immense potential.
He was transferred to Luton Town (26-12) in August 1953, United banking £10,000 in exchange for the 28-year-old who had netted 37 times in 116 senior outings for the club.
Still in his prime, Downie made an explosive start for the Hatters, netting a hat-trick in a 4-4 draw with Oldham Athletic on his debut, but then he became one of the game's wanderers, putting in shortish spells with Hull City (27-5), then Kings Lynn and Wisbech Town, Mansfield Town (18-4) and Darlington (15-2).
Still active late in his thirties, he played on with Hyde United before joining Mossley in the 1961/62 season and then Stalybridge Celtic, and would have made a Third Division comeback with Halifax Town had he not already received his Football League severance payment. When he finally laid aside his boots, Downie decided management was not for him and worked as a newsagent in Bradford until he retired in 1985.
