Born in Leigh on 30th July 1932. Died 14th March 2014.
Alexander 'Alec' Gaskell joined Manchester United as an amateur in 1949. During his time with United he joined Mossley on loan in the 1950/51 season but he made only one appearance before returning to his parent club. He remained with United until 1951 when he joined the then Football League Third Division (North) club Southport.
Inside forward Gaskell, said to have a great right foot shot, scored 18 goals in 44 games over two seasons with the Sandgrounders. His form was good enough to earn himself a chance at First Division Newcastle United in 1953.
His move to Newcastle saw him make only one first team appearance as he was soon transferred to Mansfield Town, where he scored 17 goals in 42 appearances for the Stags.
On leaving Mansfield he joined the then Midland League club Grantham Town.
He left Grantham in May 1957, initially returning home to Bolton to try to get back into league football, which he briefly did with Tranmere Rovers and despite scoring 6 goals in 6 appearances for Tranmere was released to join Cheshire League Rhyl later that year.
He later joined then fellow Cheshire Leaguers Wigan Rovers from where he signed for Eddie Quigley’s Mossley early in the 1960/61 season at 28 years old.
He quickly endeared himself to the Mossley fans, especially when scoring his first goals for the club, a hat-trick in an emphatic 5-0 Seel Park win over neighbours and rivals Stalybridge Celtic on 1st October 1960.
Mossley enjoyed their best season in several years finishing in 4th place. The team also beat a strong Tranmere Rovers Reserves side to win the Cheshire League Cup at Hyde United’s Ewen Fields ground in the final, a game in which Gaskell scored.
He finished an impressive season with 17 goals in 39 Mossley appearances.
The following season saw Gaskell score 9 goals in just 10 appearances as he struggled with injury and he left for Winsford United in January 1962.
Alec Gaskell scored 28 times in a total of 50 games for Mossley.

Born in Romford, Essex on 4th February 1957.
Geoffrey Gay turned professional with Bolton Wanderers in June 1975, having spent two years with Bolton as an apprentice.
He joined Exeter City on loan in March 1977. On his debut for Exeter, away to Crewe Alexandra, Gay took over in goal after City keeper Richard Key broke his ankle. This was the first time in Exeter City's history that a debutant outfield player had taken over in goal.
Released by Bolton, he moved to Southport in August 1977, playing 40 times in Southport's final season in the Football League as they failed to gain re-election at the end of the season.
In July 1978, Gay joined Wigan Athletic who had taken Southport's place as a League club.
He played just once, in Wigan's first ever home game in the Football league against Grimsby Town.
He left Wigan later that year, joining Macclesfield Town. This was followed by short spells with Bangor City and Crewe Alexandra before returning to Macclesfield Town in 1979.
In December 1982, while playing for Macclesfield against Witton Albion, Gay broke his leg in three places and required the insertion of a metal plate.
He later joined Mossley, Droylsden and Chorley before another spell with Macclesfield, rejoining Mossley from there in the 1986 close season.
He left Mossley in October 1986 joining Horwich RMI.

Andrew Gayle was a trainee with Oldham Athletic and played once in the league for them during the 1988-89 season.
He joined Crewe Alexandra, but again played just once.
He had spell with Bury without playing in the league before dropping out of The Football League on joining Horwich RMI.
He had a spell in Malta with Naxxar Lions before returning to Horwich.
He subsequently played for Stalybridge Celtic, Accrington Stanley, Horwich (for a third time), Ashton United, Flixton, Witton Albion, Chorley and Oldham Town before joining Nantwich Town.
He scored over 30 times in the 1999/2000 season and signed for Rossendale United in the 2000 close-season.
However, he quit Rossendale in October 2000 to join St Helens Town as a protest at the sacking of Rossendale manager Micky Graham.
He stayed just a month with St Helens, joining Mossley in November 2000.
Gayle scored 21 goals in 67 games for Mossley before in March 2003 he signed for Winsford United and in July 2003 joined Abbey Hey.
He later became a coach with Rossendale United.

Arthur Gee played for his local side Earlestown before joining Oldham Athletic. In the 1913-14 season, Gee was joint top scorer (with Oliver Tummon, scoring ten times as Oldham finished 4th in Division One.
The following season they finished runners-up to Everton. Gee remained with the Latics during the war and was again top scorer, with 13 goals in the 1919-20 season.
He left Oldham to join Stalybridge Celtic, but returned to the Football League with Rochdale.
He then played for Ashton National and Nuneaton Town before joining Mossley where he was captain during 1926-27 season.
On leaving Mossley he joined Witton Albion.

Gary signed for Mossley originally from Woodley Sports in August 2012 and went on to play an important role for the Lilywhites, making 48 appearances and scoring 6 goals, as the side reached the promotion play offs and won the Manchester Premier Cup beating Salford City in the final at Stockport County’s Edgeley Park.
Having won the Mossleyweb Player of the Year award that season he then followed manager Steve Halford to Ashton United in August 2013, making over 100 appearances for the Hurst Cross club before again following Halford onto Stalybridge Celtic, Glossop North End and most recently Buxton.
He re-signed for Mossley from Buxton in February 2019.

Warrington born Alex Gibson began his career as a junior with Manchester United before injury ended his professiuonal chances and he signed for Runcorn.
A hard working midfielder, Gibson was signed for Mossley by Bob Murphy from Witton Albion for £400 fee in September 1980 and made 18 appearances before moving to Witton Albion for a £300 fee in January 1981.
He was on the coaching staff at Warrington Town when they reached the final of the FA Vase in 1987.
Having also qualified as a teacher, Gibson went on to join the FA, coaching in 60 youth international matches - including a brief period working with Howard Wilkinson in the England under 21s set-up as well as a spell as under 15s technical director.
His seven-year spell at the FA was crowned when his under 18s side including stars such as Paul Scholes, Sol Campbell, Gary Neville and Robbie Fowler defeated Turkey in the final of the European Championships in 1993.
He later became Academy coach with Manchester City from 1998 until 2010 where he worked alongside Academy Director Jim Cassell transforming City’s youth system into one of the best in Europe, with 31 graduates progressing to the senior side during that time.
He was appointed caretaker manager of Llandudno FC in October 2017.

Born Cardiff on 2nd April 1977
Rhodri operated largely as a striker having started out as a wide midfielder. Despite not being the tallest of players he had great aerial ability and never allowed defenders to settle.
Giggs was born in Cardiff, but attended Grosvenor Road Primary School and Moorside High in Swinton after his family had moved there in 1981.
He played football for Salford Boys before joining Torquay United as a trainee, going under the name Rhodri Jones to avoid comparisons with his famous older brother.
His time as a trainee was not a happy one and he left halfway through his trainership and temporarily quit football.
He attempted to resurrect his footballing career - three years later at the age of 19, heading north and having trials with Scottish outfit Hearts, eventually ending up playing for Livingston.
After six months at Livingston he returned to England, joining the then North West Counties League side Salford City.
He moved on to Welsh side Bangor City in October 2000 and joined Aberystwyth Town in January 2002 before returning to Salford City in February 2002.
In July 2003, he left Salford again, this time to join Kidsgrove Athletic before moving to Bacup Borough in October 2003.
He moved again in February 2004, this time to Mossley where he scored 5 goals in 11 appearances for Mossley before the season’s close as Mossley were promoted from the NWCL. An outstanding season for the Lilywhites in 2004-05 saw Giggs win both the Mossley Supporters and Mossleyweb Player of the Year awards as Mossley narrowly missed out on a play off place, finishing 7th, while Giggs scored 15 goals from 48 appearances.
His 11 goals in 42 appearances in 2005-06 helped Mossley to the UniBond NPL Division One North title but manager Jason Beckford chose to release him at the end of the season.
Giggs joined FC United of Manchester where he made 37 appearance and scored 15 goals.
In August 2007, he left the club, joining Curzon Ashton the same month and then eventually moved back to Salford City.
Rhodri made a huge impression after re-signing for Salford for the third time during the summer of 2009 and in 2010 he was appointed Player Manager of the Moor Lane club with his ex Mossley and Salford team-mate and former goalkeeper Phil Melville appointed as his assistant. He won recognition for his contribution to Salford's cause when he was named as the Salford Star sports personality of the year for 2009, with the club also picking up the 'team' award. Giggs resigned as manager of Salford shortly before the end of the season and returned to solely a playing role having returned to FC United of Manchester for the 2012/13 season.
Rhodri is the younger brother of Manchester United and Wales legend Ryan Giggs and son of Danny Wilson, who played Rugby Union for Cardiff RFC and more famously Rugby League for Swinton Lions.

A tough and creative midfielder James 'Jimmy' Golder was an apprentice with Stockport County.
He played just one league game for Stockport, away to Bury in April 1972 while still aged just under 17 years old.
On leaving Stockport, he played for Stalybridge Celtic, Hyde United and Witton Albion from where he joined Mossley in September 1984.
He played 119 times for Mossley scoring 6 goals.
He was later assistant manager of Radcliffe Borough.
Golder sadly died at only 44 years old.
In August 2001 a benefit match for his family was held at Woodley Sports including a combined Radcliffe Borough / Hyde United side.

Eliot was signed in September 2019 on a one month work experience loan from EFL League Two club Bradford City. He made his first team debut for Bradford City on 25 September 2018 in the EFL Trophy in a 1-1 draw against Everton U21s, scoring the winning penalty.
He made his first senior start in the next round against Oldham Athletic. He has also appeared twice as a late substitute in the EFL Div 2 games against Scunthorpe United and Accrington Stanley in the 2018/19 season.

William "Billy" Goodwin was a forward who played for Exeter City before joining Manchester United (7-1) for a fee of £640 in June 1920.

He later joined Oldham Athletic and Congleton Town from where he joined Mossley.

Lewis Albert Goram was a goalkeeper who played for Leith Athletic before joining Hibernian in 1948.
He did not make Hibs league side and moved to Third Lanark in 1949.
In 1950 he moved to Bury where he would play 114 times.
On leaving Bury he played briefly for Buxton and Macclesfield Town and then played 12 games for Mossley between March and August 1960, leaving to join Buxton after one game of the 1960/61 season.
His son Andy was also a professional football goalkeeper and played for the Scotland national side.

Born in Glasgow on 10th December 1931, Died 29th July 2014.
Henry 'Harry' Gordon played for Glasgow Rangers as a junior, but later signed for Bury from Scottish non-league side Petershill.
He played 24 times for Bury over a seven year period, joining Buxton on leaving.
Harry then played for Runcorn before he joined his former Bury team mate Eddie Quigley's Mossley from Runcorn in the closed season of 1959 and, playing as an inside forward, scored the opening goal on his debut, a 4-0 Cheshire League victory over Wrexham Reserves at Seel Park.
Harry finished the season with 16 goals from 47 appearances playing in a forward line which included the likes of Tony Burke, Eddie Gleadall and flying winger John Willis.
The following season, 1960/61, saw Harry achieve a then post war club record 34 goals in 52 appearances helping Mossley to a 4th place finish in the Cheshire County League.
The team also won the Cheshire League Cup for the first time in 40 years. He scored two goals in the final, a 6-3 victory over Tranmere Rovers at Hyde United's Ewen Fields ground and also played as Mossley beat Ashton United 4-0 to win the Manchester FA Intermediate Cup.
Harry's strike partners that season were former Irish International Billy Hughes and Alec Gaskell. Harry's third and final full Mossley season - 1961/62, saw him score 9 goals in 43 appearances with Billy Hughes and hot-shot Harvey McCreadie grabbing most of the goalscoring headlines as Mossley finished 8th in the Cheshire League with Harry playing a deeper role as a wing half.
Harry played just 16 games of the 1962/63 season as his departure from Seel Park coincided with the departure of manager Eddie Quigley in November 1962 and he then rejoined Buxton where he played until his retirement from football.
Away from football Harry worked for many years in his home town for Bury Council

Kevin Gorman was a tigerish diminutive central midfielder who had previously played for the likes of Chadderton, Bacup Borough and Barrow.
He was signed initially by Bob Murphy in January 1979 from Droylsden for a £500 fee to help with Mossley’s title push.
He made his Mossley debut as a substitute in a 6-0 win at Workington on 31st January 1979 and after earning a place in the starting line up he became a regular in the side making a formidable central midfield pairing alongside Jimmy O’Connor as Mossley rampaged to the NPL League and Cup double.
He scored the goal that ended Northwich Victoria’s stubborn resistance to Bob Murphy’s machine in the League Cup final at Maine Road.
The following season with the number 4 shirt his own he led by example as Mossley retained the NPL title and also starred in the FA Trophy run, scoring the Seel Park goal that kept Mossley in the semi final against Boston United and of course appeared in the final itself at Wembley.
He remained pretty much a fixture in the side throughout the next three seasons as Mossley finished NPL runners up on each occasion but finally moved on in the wake of Bob Murphy’s departure in December 1983.
Spells with Southport, Buxton and Rossendale United followed and in December 1989 he returned to Mossley via Stalybridge Celtic to help out Mark Hilton’s ailing side.
When Hilton departed in October 1990 Kevin was offered the manager’s job, but, due to increasing work commitments he reluctantly declined the offer and worked as assistant to John Cooke in his brief spell in charge before retiring from football at the end of the 1990-91 season.
In 1991 he moved to live in Aberdeen and had a fourteen-year stint as a Human Resources Manager in the oil industry and after retirement moved to live in Grange-over-Sands. Kevin is still involved in the game playing walking football in both Grange-over-Sands and competitively for Fleetwood Town.

Andrew Gorton was an apprentice with Oldham Athletic (26-0) and progressed to their first team, eventually replacing Andy Goram when he left for Rangers.
He had loan spells with Stockport County (14-0) and Tranmere Rovers (1-0) before leaving Oldham to join Stockport (34-0) in 1988.
At the end of the 1988-89 season he joined Lincoln City (20-0), but was transferred after 20 games, joining non-league Glossop North End for their club record fee paid of £3000 in 1989.
He rejoined Oldham Athletic in 1990, again for a fee of £3000, but moved on to Crewe Alexandra (3-0) on non-contract terms without appearing in the league for Oldham before joining Witton Albion.
Gorton moved from Witton to Mossley playing four times during the 1991-92 season.
He later joined Bury, from where he went on loan to Altrincham in May 1993.

He progressed to their first team (133-4). He moved to Oxford United (24-1) in 1982.
Out of favour during the 1983-84 season, Grant had a spell on loan with Chesterfield (7-0) before joining Cardiff City (25-0).
He joined Rochdale (97-2) in the 1984-85 season. On leaving Rochdale he joined Macclesfield Town. During the 1988-89 season he had a spell on loan with Mossley, playing four times and scoring once.
In December 1988 he left Macclesfield, joining Boston United (35-2) for a small fee.

Brian Geoffrey Green is a former coach and player. As a player he competed in the Football League as a forward in the 1950s and 1960s for Rochdale (46-8), Southport (20-7), Colwyn Bay, Barrow (3-0) Altrincham, Exeter City (9-1) and Chesterfield (2-0).
Joined Mossley in 1963 scoring 6 gaols in 12 games before going to Australia to play for Sydney club Prague.
Green was later coach of the Australian national football team in 1975 and 1976.
He left after being charged and convicted of stealing two LP records.
Green also held coaching positions in Norway with IK Start and Bryne FK. Bryne FK won two Silver Medals in 1980 and 1982 in the highest league in Norway with Brian Green, and thus qualified for the UEFA Cup in 1981 and 1983 returning to England as manager of Rochdale and was later coach at Leeds United.

Fred Greenhalgh was a right winger who scored on his home debut for Bury FC against Blackpool in 1945, earning praise from the opposite no.7 Stanley Matthews.
He was signed for Mossley by Joe Barlow in the 1947/48 season, scoring 4 goals in 16 appearances before moving to Ashton United.
After a spell at Droylsden and two seasons at Rossendale United, he ended his career with two final appearances for Mossley in the 1951-52 season.

Anthony "Tony" Grimshaw joined Manchester United as an apprentice in April 1974, turning professional in December of the same year.
His first team debut came in the League Cup in September 1975, a 2-1 win at home to Brentford. He also made one league appearance, but after that did not feature again in the United first team. He was released at the end of the 1978-79 season and joined Mossley where he played 22 games the following season.

Born in South Shields on 25th October 1898. Died Childswickham 26th December 1997.
John Barton Grimwood was transferred from South Shields Parkside to Manchester United in May 1919, and made his debut for the club in the first Manchester derby on 11 October 1919, as a replacement for Lal Hilditch, who was away on international duty.
Able to play in all three half-back positions, he was a utility player for the club. He helped United gain promotion to the First Division in the 1924-25 season. However, he suffered a knee injury for most of the next season, and needed to undergo an operation.
In 1925-26, he played at centre-half regularly, sharing the position with Frank Barson.
After scoring 8 goals in 205 appearances for United, he left the club for Aldershot in June 1927.
He later joined Blackpool (7 - 0) and Altrincham before signing for Mossley in 1926.

Brian Grundy was an outside-left who was just 5'5" tall, Brian was a schoolteacher who was spotted by Bury playing part-time for Wigan Athletic in a Lancashire Cup tie against the Shakers at Gigg Lane in November 1967. He scored against Bury that day and so impressed boss Les Shannon that he paid out £3,000 to take him to Gigg Lane just a week later.
Originally a part-time -professional at Bury, he signed full-time forms in January 1968 and played his part in helping the Shakers to promotion from Division Three later that season.
In all he played in 94 league games for Bury over the next four seasons and scored ten goals. Perhaps like all wingers, he was lacking in consistency at times and in July 1971 joined Great Harwood from where he had spells with Bangor City, Morecambe and Winsford United before arriving at Mossley for a bargain £100 fee under Bob Murphy in March 1979.
He helped Mossley secure their first Northern Premier League title and played in the League Cup final win over Northwich Victoria at Maine Road.
He was in the side as it started the following season but was released in November 1979 making his last appearance in the FA Cup defeat at York City on 24th November having made a total of 30 appearances for the Lilywhites scoring just one goal but creating many more.
He became manager of Glossop and spent the next three years at Surrey Street before returning to Seel Park as a popular choice of manager to replace the departed Bob Murphy in November 1983.
Unfortunately for Grundy, who was by now landlord of a public house in Glossop, things didn't go as he hoped.
Mossley were struggling financially and the team slipped down the table and finally finished bottom of the NPL and had to apply for re-election.
Strangely, Mossley had won their last two games of the 83-84 season and Grundy was given another opportunity to build a contending side.
Sadly he failed - and just four wins in the opening 19 games of the 1984-85 season saw Grundy dismissed following a home FA Cup defeat by Goole Town.
Brian Grundy never returned to football management and departed to live in Spain.

James M. "Jimmy" Gunning  was a junior with Wolverhampton Wanderers, but was unable to settle and returned to Scotland in 1946, signing for Hibernian as an amateur.
He then joined the Royal Air Force; a posting in the Highlands allowed Gunning to play Highland League football for Forres Mechanics.
After leaving the RAF, Gunning returned to Easter Road, but he found first team opportunities very limited. He played once for Hibs in a league match, during the 1950-51 season.
Gunning signed for Manchester City in November 1950. During three seasons with the club, Gunning made 13 league appearances.
He left City in 1953, joining Weymouth but in 1954 returned to the Football League when he joined Barrow, playing ten times in the 1954-55 season.
Gunning played just once for Mossley in the 1957-58 season.
