Mossley Reserves returned to winning ways with a thumping 4-1 victory over Witton Albion Reserves at Seel Park on Thursday night. Debutant striker Chris Hall led the way with a quality brace as the Ressies bounced back after two goalless defeats.

It was Witton who were quickest out of the blocks and pressured Mossley from the off with Nick Ashley forced into a fine early save to deny Matt Wooley.

As the game settled and the central defensive pairing of skipper Mike Jones and debutant Phil Cooper got to grips with the Witton strikers, Mossley began to make inroads of their own. Alex Byrne hit the foot of the post with a rasping drive before the Lilywhites second string took a deserved 24th minute lead. Jordan Cuff's right wing cross was headed powerfully home by Chris Hall from eight yards.

Shortly after the goal Mossley lost Mike Brickhill through injury with Steve Settle replacing him though Mossley continued to dominate and were awarded a penalty four minutes before the break. Jordan Cuff was upended by visitors keeper Steve Massey and Alex Byrne sent Massey the wrong way from the resultant spot kick.

A minute before the break Mossley made it 3-0 when Chris Hall used his strength and determination to good effect to score at the second attempt from close range after Massey had parried the first attempt.

The second half saw Mossley take their foot off the gas somewhat and Nick Ashley was twice called upon to make good saves before Mossley added a fourth goal in the 70th minute. Joe Heap struck a quality free kick from deep on the left and substitute Nathan Tosum (who had earlier replaced Hall) dived full stretch to head past Massey from the edge of the six yard box.

Witton got a consolation goal six minutes from time when Ashley unluckily upended a Witton forward and visitors captain Dean Ennion scored from the penalty spot.
