The small crowd that gathered at Seel Park on a damp Thursday evening witnessed an open free scoring game that could easily have seen Mossley notch double figures.

A much changed reserves line up that saw Abbey Hey youngsters Sam Jones (who was at Mossley last season) and Dale Roberts drafted into the side, created chance after chance throughout the 90 minutes with Jones in particular standing out with a well taken hat-trick.

The pace and movement of the Mossley forwards caused the visitors problems from the off and the Lilywhites second string, playing their final home game, were rampant in attack throughout the 90 minutes.

Jones, Walcott and Heap all had early chances but the visitors were the ones to take a shock lead in the 12th minute when a defensive mix up saw Joe Higgins left with a simple tap in.

Mossley, undeterred continued to force the pace and more chances went begging with Fleetwood keeper Joe Wheeler riding his luck on a number of occasions. However, try as they might, the elusive equalizer failed to materialize in what was a one sided opening half.

After failing to find the net in a dominant first half Mossley finally found their finishing boots immediately after the restart. Just two minutes into the second period Jay Walcott broke free and squared for Jones to knock home the first of his treble.

Four minutes later and Mossley were two up when Joe Heap rifled home a well taken goal but Fleetwood didn't surrender at this point hit the bar and had an effort cleared off the line before equalising on 67 minutes after more sloppy defending allowed Ben Duffield to flick home.

Fleetwood were level for only two minutes before the Lilywhites edged ahead again as Jones rapped home his second goal after some slick approach play and two minutes later it was 4-2 when Davison Banda scored a fine individual goal, looping a shot into the far corner after a surging run on the right wing.

Two minutes later and Fleetwood pulled a goal back. Substitute Callum Harkin was the victim of an unlucky handball in the box and Duffield fired home his second goal from the penalty spot.

Mossley then went straight up the other end and Alex Byrne, Heap, Cuff and Walcott worked well to create the opening for Jones to complete his treble on 76 minutes, and there the scoring, but not the chances, ended.

Jones was denied a fourth by an excellent point blank save by Wheeler and Walcott and Heap also went close in the closing stages as Mossley comfortably held on to their two goal lead.
