The Reserves came up against an experienced Formby side at Seel Park on Tuesday night and were thankful for the electric pace of striker Jay Walcott who's second half brace sealed a hard earned victory as Mossley finally wore down a previously very effective high line offside trap.

It was an interesting if unattractive tactic that was destined to come unstuck but Formby also had another trick as they pumped regular early crosses into the Mossley box where they still came unstuck as despite the Lilywhites lacking inches in defence they coped admirably. Skipper Ben Fallows and youth teamer Max Thomas both performing with great credit.

In the first half Mossley were denied by the referees assistant's flag on regular occasions, though one or two of the numerous offside decisions that went the visitors way, were at the very least dubious. Walcott did burst clear twice but heavy touches as he attempted to round the keeper saw the visitors survive in tact at the break.

After the frustrations of the opening half it was a relief that it took only two minutes of the second half to finally break the deadlock. Walcott held his run and then burst through on the right, the flag stayed down and the ex FC United of Manchester striker danced merrily and at high speed around the keeper and hurriedly recovering defenders before finally placing the ball in the net.

Formby, for their part, contrived to hit the bar on two occasions but their shooting was mostly inaccurate and Mossley defended well to minimize the visitors chances.

With eleven minutes remaining Walcott finally sealed the victory as he again raced through and rounded the keeper again before tapping home.

Mossley went in search of a third goal with Matt Landregan was next to break clear of a by now totally failed offside trap, Landregan unselfishly played in Walcott but he wasn't able to beat the keeper this time and so was denied a deserved hat-trick.
