Mossley Youth were extremely unlucky not to make it to the final of the UMBRO Trophy at Keele University as they lost out on goal difference to Bristol's Filton Academy.

The Mossley team were under the cosh in the early stages with a strong and mobile Filton side causing problems but it was Mossley who forged the best early opening with Antony Dorney denied by the keeper's legs when faced one on one.

The game had levelled into an even end to end contest when Filton opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a thunderbolt shot into the top corner from 30 yards that the scorer seemed highly surprised to have taken.

Worse was to follow two minutes later as Filton's number 10 slotted home after Mossley failed to clear their lines.

Mossley showed great character though and continued to play their own game and deservedly reduced the arrears in the 20th minute when Connor Hampson turned the ball home from close range after a spell of Mossley pressure.

Mossley continued to create the better openings and Dorney was unfortunate not to score as his powerful effort was deflected for a corner.

The second half saw Filton attempt to stifle Mossley's passing game and this was to large extent successful. Neither side able to carve out any clear chances as defences were dominant.

Mossley needed only a draw to reach the final and it looked like all their hard work would be rewarded in the final minute as heavy Mossley pressure saw Hampson upended in the box. Unfortunately for Mossley Brad Byrne's penalty kick cleared the bar and with Filton, Chasetown and Mossley all finishing on 6 points the decision went to goal difference with Mossley unluckily pushed down to third place.

Mossley now meet Stalybridge Celtic who finished 3rd in their group in the play off for 5th place at Keele tomorrow afternoon.
