Mossley suffered their first League defeat at a rain-soaked Wright Robinson College on Sunday going down to a shock 2-3 result against Nantwich Town.

The defeat was very much self inflicted after conceding two goals in the opening five minutes and then contriving to miss a hatful of chances against a hard working but technically limited Nantwich side.

The first goal came when Alex Chesters sliced a clearance that allowed Nantwich’s more than useful centre forward to fire home. Keeper Nick Howard then made a rare fumble to gift Nantwich a second two minutes later from a speculative 25 yard shot.

Heap, Dorney and McNamara all missed good chances before Mossley finally halved the arrears in the 52nd minute when Fabio Abreu fired home after some neat approach play. However, in their very next attack the visitors big centre forward volleyed home his second as Mossley failed to clear a left wing corner.

Alex Byrne got Mossley back in the game when he flicked home a header from Ryan Smith’s cross in the 65th minute.

Mossley piled on the late pressure and Cuff, Abreu, Swanick and McNamara all went close in the late stages but the visitors held out to record a memorable win and consign the Lilywhites youngsters to a disappointing first League defeat.
