Mossley's Youth team won their first trophy on Thursday night beating New Mills 2-1 at Salford City's Moor lane ground to lift the Manchester FA Youth Cup.

The Lilywhites youngsters weren't at their best on the night but still had just enough to overcome a very hard working and resiliant Millers side who got in Mossley's faces closing down space quickly on Salford's expansive pitch and making it difficult for the Lilywhites boys to play their usual brand of fluid attacking football.

Chances were at a premium as both sides struggled to create meaningful openings. Nick Howard saved well from an early Millers chance and then Wes Harney broke clear and roundded the keeper only to have his effort blocked by a covering defender.

Mossley lossed right back Ryan Smith through injury in the 25th minute and he was replaced by Kyle McDonagh with Mossley then switching from a 4-4-2 formation to 3-5-2.

Mossley's hard working midfield had control of the game but were constantly thwarted by some good tackling and some equally sloppy passing.

The game started to open up after the break and it was the unfancied New Mills boys who took the lead in the 51st minute. Mossley conceded a free kick deep on the left which was swung in goalwards by the New Mills right back. Unfortunately for Mossley, keeper Howard misjudged the flight of the ball and and it slipped through his hands and over the line to give New Mills a surprise lead.

Mossley finally stepped up a gear and shots from Fabio ABreu and Joe Heap caused consternation for the Millers. The equaliser finally came on 63 minutes. Andy McKernon crossed well from the left and Mossley skipper Alex Byrne reacted quickest to blast home from 10 yards.

Mossley continued to dominate but the final ball was often inconclusive. However, lady luck was on Mossley's side in the 72nd minute when Harney broke clear and rounded the keeper only to go down over the stopper's challenge with the referee awarding a penalty. The keeper was yellow carded and Joe Heap stepped up to hammer the ball home from the spot.

New Mills never stopped working for an equaliser but the Mossley defence held firm and Mossley's Youth team, who have enjoyed an excellent debut season, gave the Mossley faithful something to cheer by winning their first trophy.
