A much tougher game for the Mossley Youth team on Tuesday night saw the Lilywhites edge home by the only goal, scored a minute before the interval by England Schoolboy International Fabio Abreu.

Mossley created a host of chances but some wayward finishing and a little bad luck meant that Mossley had to wait until the 44th minute to take the lead.

Woodley were no slouches and worked tirelessly all over the pitch to make this a particularly high tempo game.

Joe Heap came close to a goal with a fantastic shot that cannoned off the woodwork after a typical mazy run. Abreu had a couple of shots well saved while.

The only goal of the game came from a superb through ball by Heap which sent Abreu scampering clear of the last defender before calmly slotting the ball past the advancing keeper.

Mossley striker Antony Dorney will want to forget this game in a hurry as he had a misfiring first half that saw him hit shots over the roof of the stand on three occasions before being substituted at half time shortly after receiving a yellow card for dissent.

Woodley applied more pressure after the break and Nick Howard made a couple of excellent saves to deny the Woodley forwards.

Mossley had Andy McKernon dismissed for a highly dubious second yellow by a thoroughly over-zealous referee who did his best to spoil an otherwise exciting encounter with some bizarre decisions that angered and frustrated both sides. McKernon was followed up the tunnel ten minutes later by Woodley’s Jamael Erving-Bayley who was equally unlucky to feel the wrath of the referee as Mossley comfortably held on to secure the three points.
