The Mossley Youth team just failed in their bid to clinch runners up spot as they went down 2-1 to rivals FC United of Manchester at Seel Park on a windswept Tuesday evening.

The Lilywhites youngsters gave a hugely improved performance to the one which saw them beaten by FC United in the Open Cup three days earlier and can consider themselves unfortunate not to take at least a point from this game.

As in the earlier meeting it was FC United who opened the scoring early in the game. In the 6th minute Joshua Matthew ran on to a pass from Theo Kidd into the box to fire home.

Mossley worked hard to gain a foothold and Adam Bezzina and Prince Amadin both came close to an equaliser but it was the visitors who doubled their advantage on the stroke of half time.

Josh Smethurst scoring from a rebound after Curtis Hickman had saved the United defender’s initial shot.

Early in the second half FC United keeper Jonathan Beisty made a great save to deny Ross Hildersley from a free kick but moments later Mossley winger Jordyn Fitton halved the arrears with a well struck cross shot that angled into the far corner of the net.

Mossley worked hard for an equaliser and a couple of skirmishes in the visitors box may have resulted in a goal with only some frantic defending keeping Mossley at bay. However, it wasn’t to be as United hung on to collect the points and leave Mossley scrapping for a third place finish with Morecambe and Altrincham the new rivals for that position.
