Mossley went on the rampage against their former NWCL rivals at Seel Park on Tuesday night to progress to the 2nd round of the UniBond League Cup and an away tie at Chorley!
The home side opened brightly with the Seel Park pitch looking much better than of late appearing to inspire the team to get the ball down and play, and that is exactly what they did do. The loss of Leon Mike with a recurrence of his hamstring trouble just 20 minutes in could have adversely affected the team. In the end it acted as a spur as Mossley tore into Clitheroe's defence with the outstanding Adam Morning causing havoc on the left wing.
Mossley took a deserved lead on 33 minutes following a flowing move. Matty Taylor made progress down the right wing and his cross field pass found John Hore who released Morning down the left. The teenage winger left two defenders in his wake with fleet footed trickery and crossed for Chris Downey to cushion home a header from six yards. Mossley were rarely troubled as Clitheroe's attack appeared toothless but it was after the interval that Mossley took full control.
The second goal came five minutes after the break. Morning won a 50/50 with Todhunter and crossed for the unmarked substitute Leyton Slack to slot home from 10 yards.
Rhodri Giggs hit the bar with a cheeky lob before Mossley made it 3-0 on 60 minutes when Morning was yet again the provider with an inch perfect cross that saw Shaun Dootson stoop to head home his first goal of the season from close range.
Five minutes later Chris Downey scored his second when Morning found Giggs who played a neat ball through for Mossley's leading scorer to bag his 12th of the season.
The scoring was completed in the 70th minute when Giggs' through ball left Leyton Slack in the clear from half way and the talented Scottish teenager controlled well, ran half the length of the pitch and rounded the keeper to score a fine solo goal on his return home debut!
