Mossley ended the month of November the way they began it, with an emphatic home win over former North West Counties League rivals Clitheroe! This time it was the important issue of three points and Mossley were well worth their hard earned victory.
It was an open entertaining end to end first half with goalmouth action aplenty at both ends. Jackson and Spencer both going close for the visitors while at the other end Goodeve, Downey and Dootson all had similarly unsuccessful attempts at goal. Goodeve was unfortunate to see an effort come back off the post with visitors keeper Richens well beaten and Meadowcroft's effort met a similar fate. Mossley's big number 5, one of a trio of players returning from injury, Taylor and Dootson being the others, was again unfortunate not to score when he had a shot cleared off the line while Reynolds crashed a shot off the bar for Clitheroe.
If the first half was nip and tuck at both ends the second was anything but as Mossley took control. Clitheroe had spurned an early chance before Mossley took the lead in the 53rd minute. Rhodri Giggs perfect through ball found Chris Downey who delicately volleyed past the stranded Richens from the edge of the box.
A minute later the game was all but wrapped up. Dominic Studley, who had an outstanding home debut, sent Adam Morning typically scampering down the left wing and his perfect cross was controlled by Chris Downey who turned in an instant and fired home right footed.
Lee Cryer missed a sitter for Clitheroe when clean through on goal and that was the end of Clitheroe as an attacking force. Mossley were now comfortably in cruise control and looked dangerous in every attack but had to wait until the 83rd minute to score again. Morning's right wing corner was headed against the bar by Steve Sheil but the rebound fell to Danny Meadowcroft who blasted home his first goal for the club through a crowded area.
Downey was then unluckily denied his hat-trick by a narrow off-side decision after good work by Morning and Patterson as Mossley strove to cement an excellent result!
