With the Seel Park pitch in a very heavy condition Mossley battled to an encouraging 3-1 victory over Lincolnshire side Spalding United.
Spalding, unlike many of their contemporaries came looking for 3 points and with an attack minded line up set about Mossley from the kick off with the returning Lee Bracey soon in the action denying the lively Andy Stanhope. However, with their first meaningful attack of the game the Lilywhites took a 6th minute lead. Mario Daniel made a fine surging run down the right and his low cross was fired home at the second attempt by home debutant Melford Knight from 12 yards.
Spalding bounced back and Bracey made a fine diving save to deny Nimmo as Mossley were forced to soak up pressure and play on the break. Unfortunately for Mossley the final ball was poor and so some good approach play was ruined too often by misplaced crosses.
Two minutes before the break Mossley doubled their advantage. Jordan Goodeve's perfect through ball found Rhodri Giggs who camly lobbed the advancing keeper from the edge of the box and the ball dropped from the sky to bounce on the line and up into the roof of the net.
2-0 up and in cruise control Mossley were happy to soak up Spalding pressure in the second half and the visitors were unable to trouble Lee Bracey despite Mossley becoming increasingly bogged down in the Seel Park mud as the visitors enjoyed long spells of possession.
Spalding gave themselves a brief glimmer of hope when Matt Oswin rifled a 20 yard screamer into the top corner beyond Bracey on 68 minutes but the Lilywhites retsored the advantage straight from the kick off. Paul Challinor's speculative through ball was controlled brilliantly by Rhodri Giggs who then drew the keeper before curling the ball beyond his reach and wrap up the points for Mossley.
Stanhope's attempted chip bounced off the top of Mossley's bar and at the other end Mario Daniel had a goalbound shot blocked and Giggs fired wide when searching for his hat-trick, but it was in the end a comfortable win for Mossley despite Spalding dominating possession in the second half.
