Formed in 1940 as Salford Central the club played in local leagues until stepping up to the Manchester League in 1963, changing their name to Salford Amateurs.
The ‘Ammies’ became a real force in the 1970’s, winning the Lancashire Amateur Cup in 1973, 1975 and again in 1977. All the Manchester County Cups and the League title came their way, and in one season of note, seven major trophies sat with pride in their trophy cabinet. The prestigious
Manchester Challenge Trophy was won four times in five seasons in the latter half of the 70’s, with the ultimate prize of the time - Champion of Champions - being secured in 1977.
Much renovation to their run down Moor Lane ground saw Salford elected to the Cheshire League in 1980 and the current record attendance at Moor Lane was set when a massive 3,000 witnessed an FA Vase 5th Round tie against Whickham.
Salford became founder members of the North West Counties League in 1982 and in 1989 they appeared in the Manchester Premier Cup Final at Old Trafford and lost their ‘Amateurs’ tag to become Salford City.
The transition to senior status has not always been an easy one for Salford City but with great potential as the only semi pro’ club in the area, the club have expanded with a network of junior and youth teams.
Assistant Manager Andy Brown replaced Billy Garton as manager but Brown resigned prior to a 4-0 home defeat by Skelmersdale after financial cutbacks had made his job untenable. He was replaced by former Mossley striker Chris Willcock and another former Lilywhite John Foster also had a spell in charge.
Salford are now managed by Gary Fellows who last season guided City to victory in the NWCL Challenge Cup beating Cammel Laird in the Gigg Lane Final.
There is a new chairman at City – and he’s aiming to take the club into the National Conference League within six years. Local businessman Steve Quick has vowed to give manager Gary Fellows increased funds to strengthen the side and build on last season’s encouraging progress in the North West Counties’ first division.
City enjoyed arguably their best season in 20 years – winning the league cup and narrowly missing out on promotion. And there is more success on the horizon, according to 36-year-old Quick.
The ex-Salford City player, who lives in Worsley, said: "The club has lots of potential. We have a young and predominantly Salford-based side and I’m looking to get us into the Conference within six years. Everyone at the club knows what’s expected of them and they’ll be given the tools to achieve those things.
"Gary Fellows will be given an increased budget to help him bring in quality players. He did a great job for the club last season and some clubs have been sniffing around him. The same goes for some of our players, who I’m sure could play at a higher level.
"But we want them to stay and fulfil their potential at Salford City. This club is going places and the manager tells me that he is confident of us doing very well next season."
Previous chairman Ged Carter has stepped aside to make way for Quick’s arrival at the club.
The former Accrington Stanley player is the owner of the Pendleton-based Hawk Security company, who have agreed a sponsorship deal with City.
He has promised that the club will be run professionally under his leadership and he is looking into getting better training facilities for the players.
