St Roch's Bury (60-1) Southampton (1-0) Wigan Borough (7-0) Norwich City Horwich RMI Mossley (3-0) unknown |
Born in Glasgow on 3rd April 1898. Died 25th January 1980. John Callagher started his career playing Junior football with St. Roch's. In June 1921, he moved to England to join Bury (60-1). Callagher spent three seasons with the Gigg Lane club, helping them gain promotion to the First Division as runners-up in 1924. Following their promotion, Bury signed Bill Turner from Southampton in April 1924, with Stan Woodhouse and Callagher moving to the south coast as part of the deal. He made his solitary first-team appearance for the Saints when he replaced Alec Campbell for the Second Division match at Stoke City on 1 September 1924. The match ended in a 2–0 defeat and manager Jimmy McIntyre called another new signing, Dennis Jones, into the side for the next match. Callagher spent the remainder of his time at The Dell in the reserves and in the summer of 1925 he was placed on the transfer list at his own request. In June 1925, he was signed by Wigan Borough for a fee of £400. He made his debut for Wigan in a Third Division North at Ashington on 29 August 1925, when he scored in a 3–3 draw. He scored again in the next match, a 5–1 victory over Coventry City in which Tom Fenner scored the other four goals. Callagher retained his place for a further six matches before he lost his place to Bob Scorer. In June 1926, Callagher joined Norwich City but left after six months without a first-team appearance and dropped into non-league football with Horwich RMI and Mossley whilst employed as a fireman in Blackpool. |

West Wylham Junior Throckley Miners Welfare Cardifff City Cardiff Nomads Bury Northwich Victoria Mossley (86-3) Radcliffe Borough |
Born in the north east in 1933, Died June 2021 William Cherry played his first competitive football as a goalscoring inside right for West Wylham Juniors, before scoring 5 goals in 3 matches for Throckley Miners Welfare senior side, where he also worked as an assistant groundsman after leaving school. Bill's form was such that he was recomended to Cardiff City by former Bluebirds centre forward Reg Keating and he soon headed for south Wales. Bill played his first game for Cardiff City Reserves in the Football Combination against Coventry City Reserves just prior to his 16th birthday. When not catching the reserves Bill played regularly for City's nursery club Cardiff Nomads, who, despite being made up entirely of teenagers ran away with the Cardiff Combination (open age) League and won the Welsh Youth Cup. Bill's manager at Cardiff Nomads was former Welsh International.Jack Nichols who was capped both at amateur and professional level. Bill signed a one year professional contract for Cardiff in 1950, but didn't make the first team and moved instead to live in Heywood where he was signed by Bury for the 1952-53 season. He appeared regularly for the reserves and 'A' team but before the season was over he had moved to Northwich Victoria in the Cheshire League. Bill was signed by Mossley manager Jack Boothway early in the 1954-55 season. Ironically Bill made his Mossley debut against his former club and scored both Mossley goals as Northwich won 4-2 at Seel Park. Boothway had the bright idea of switching Bill to right half and the move paid dividends, as, not only did he relish in the move, he strengthened Mossley's half back line considerably and was regularly praised in the press and by supporters for his displays as a strong and creative footballer. His second season at Mossley saw the club struggling off the field, so much so, there was much speculation that the club may fold. They even allowed manager Boothway to move to Northwich Victoria and operated the 1955-56 season with Jock Anderson taking training and the team selected by the management committee. That the team went and won the Ashton Cup despite the fear of disbandment was a great acolade to the team spirit of that Mossley side led by captain, centre half and team hard man Jack Wilkinson ably supported by wing halves Bill Cherry and Harold Barlow. Goalkeeper was Dennis Ross, full backs were Eddie Thornley and Roy Wells. The usual forward line was Ron Parkes, Cyril Megson, Tommy Doyle, Jackie Ward and Ron Garland. Bill left Mossley following the Cup win and joined Manchester League Radcliffe Borough and finished his playing career in Sunday football with Heywood Casuals, where he was a team-mate of former Mossley winger Eric Jenyans in a side founded by one time Mossley manager, the late Don Wilson. |

Born in Chesterfield
on 10th May 1901.
Died in Hove 5th October 1964. A relative latecomer to the sport, Cowan did not play football until he was 17 and was 22 by the time he turned professional. He made his league debut for Doncaster Rovers in 1923, and signed for First Division Manchester City the following season. Quickly he established a reputation for his heading ability. Matt Busby, who played with Cowan throughout the early 1930s remembered: "He could head a ball as far as most of us could kick it." The legendary Dixie Dean, who many would argue was the greatest header of the ball of all time, was also a great fan and aerial duels between City and Everton always became Cowan v Dean.In addition to the three Wembley FA Cup Final appearances, Cowan won a Second Division Championship medal, and earned three English international appearances (France, Belgium and Austria) between 1926 and 1931. He also appeared for the Football League and in an England trial match (The Rest v England 1931). After a total of 407 League and Cup matches and 24 goals, he was transferred to Bradford City for a fee of £2,000 (Bradford's second highest at that time) but, in the summer of 1937 Cowan was appointed player-manager at Mossley. He brought in centre forward David ’Dai’ James (later transferred to Chelsea) from Leeds United and James responded with 42 goals (including six in one game). Cowan led Mossley to a highly respectable 7th place in the then powerful Cheshire League and also to 2-1 Manchester Challenge Shield Final win over Ashton National at Hurst Cross. He made several other crucial signings for the Lilywhites, not least inside forward Harry Brierley from Rochdale who scored 20 goals, former Manchester City favourite Dick Threlfall, former Sunderland wing half Arthur Welsby and ex Wrexham and Oldham Athletic goalkeeper Bob Foster. Cowan made 39 appearances for Mossley scoring one goal. At the end of the season Cowan resigned to become Brighton & Hove Albion's trainer. He then accepted the Manchester City manager's job in 1946. Despite his many strengths, the appointment was not a long one. He guided the Blues to promotion, but found it difficult to concentrate at Maine Road. he wanted to continue his life in Brighton and he resigned in June 1947. He then set up a lucrative physiotherapy business in Hove and worked with Sussex C.C.C. and Brighton Ice Hockey Club. Later he became masseur to the M.C.C. for their 1962 Australian tour. Sam Cowan collapsed on 5th October 1964 while refereeing a charity match in aid of Sussex wicketkeeper Jim Parks. It was a big showbiz affair with celebrities such as Tommy Steele taking part. Cowan, aged 62, died in the dressing room. |

Born in .Kendal
on 21st February 1959, Paul Cuddy signed for Rochdale from junior football in August 1977. However he made only one substitute appearance for Rochdale and was released in May 1978. Cuddy then played for a variety of non-league clubs most notably Altrincham where he was capped three times for the England Semi-Pro team then managed by Howard Wilkinson. He then played for Witton Albion, Chorley and Horwich RMI. He arreived at Mossley along with ex Chorley boss Glenn Buckley in March 1995 with Mossley staring relegation from the UniBond League in the face. Despite Cuddy's best efforts Mossley didn't avoid the drop and when Buckley left to coach in the USA Cuddy was asked to stay on and work with Kevan Keelan for Mossley's first season in the North West Counties League. However, it became obvious that the combination wasn't working and Cuddy departed from Seel Park and joined Fleetwood as a player in October 1995. He later had a spell with Ramsbottom United before joining Nantwich Town as manager. Later assistant Manager of Abbey Hey |
