Born in
Blackburn 26th December 1898, Died in Blackburn 1959 James "Jimmy" Leaver was a defender who spent six years at Blackpool in the 1920’s, making over 100 Football League appearances for the club. Leaver, a hard tackling right back, made his debut for Blackpool on 7th February 1920, in a 1–0 victory at Sheffield Wednesday. He went on to make two further appearances in the 1920–21 season. Leaver made four appearances in 1921–22. He also scored his first goal for the club, in a 3–1 victory over West Ham at Bloomfield Road on 6 May in the final league game of the season. In 1922–23, Leaver appeared in over half of the Seasiders' league games. In his 28 starts, he scored one goal – in a 2–1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on 7th April. Leaver achieved exactly the same stats in 1923–24. This time, however, his goal came in the first game of the league campaign, a 2–2 draw at home to Oldham Athletic on 25th August. For the 1924–25 term, Leaver made 33 league appearances, his most in a Blackpool shirt. He also helped the club to the fourth round of the FA Cup. The 1925–26 season was Leaver's final one with Blackpool. He made ten league appearances and scored one goal. His strike came in a 2–2 draw at home to Port Vale. Leaver left Blackpool to join Watford making 35 appearances and scoring 3 goals in the 1927-28 season before returning north and signing for Mossley in August 1928 where he was immediately appointed club captain. Leaver, by now aged 30, appeared in all 42 games in his debut Mossley season, helping the side to the Ashton Challenge Cup Final, a game lost to Ashton National in front of an 8,000 attendance at National Park. 1929-30 season saw Leaver make a further 44 appearances, scoring 4 goals (all penalties) as Mossley finished in 10th place in the Cheshire League. This time he led Mossley to victory in the Ashton Challenge Cup as the Lilywhites beat Stalybridge Celtic 3-1 in front of 6,000 spectators at National Park. Injury limited Leaver to just 31 appearances the following season and just 24 in his final season with the club in 1931-32. He made a total of 141 appearances for Mossley scoring 6 goals. Leaver departed for Stalybridge Celtic in the 1932 close season and later became their manager before returning to Mossley in August 1939 this time as team manager, remaining in the post until May 1940 when football was ended due to World War Two. |

Born in Huddersfield in March 1896. Died: 1946. Goalkeeper Laurence Lunn played for Royton Amateurs as a youth before having an unsuccessful trial period at Rochdale. He started his professional career at the age of 25 when he joined Football League First Division side Oldham Athletic in 1921. However, he failed to make a senior appearance during his sole season with the Boundary Park outfit and moved into Cheshire League football with Ashton National. After a second spell with Royton Amateurs, Lunn returned to the professional ranks, signing for Crewe Alexandra ahead of the 1923/24 campaign. He made his Football League debut in the 1–3 defeat to Durham City on 10 November 1923 and went on to make 13 appearances in all competitions during the campaign, although only one of those matches ended in victory, a 2–1 win away at Barrow on 19 January 1924. In the summer of that year, Lunn joined Nelson, who had just been relegated to the Third Division North from the Second Division. He remained with Nelson throughout the 1924/25 season but was unable to displace established first-choice goalkeeper Harry Abbott and did not play a single game for the club. Lunn joined fellow Third Division North side Barrow in June 1925 and made 12 league appearances for the club during the first half of the 1925/26 campaign, including a 1–0 victory against his former employers Nelson. He then had a brief spell in Welsh football with Llandudno before returning to England with Accrington Stanley, where he played five league games. Lunn re-signed for Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 1926 and made a further four appearances for the club before briefly rejoining joining Ashton National. He signed for Mossley in 1927 and became the first Mossley goalkeeper ever to score a goal. |

Born Oldham 21st November 1948 Died Oldham 19th December 2019 Having played at Bolton Wanderers and Bury as a junior, David Edward Lyon, still a teenager, signed for Don Wilson’s Mossley in 1967. He quickly made the left wing spot his own and scored 9 goals in 31 highly impressive performances in the 1967/68 season making him a big hit with the Mossley fans who saw a great career ahead for the lively wingman. He was a tenacious and hardworking player who was a target for Football League scouts but he chose instead to join Macclesfield Town as they became founder members of the Northern Premier League in 1968, having played in Mossley first 10 games of the 1968/69 season scoring 2 goals. He wrote his name in the record books in May 1970 when he played in front of 28.000 fans scoring the first ever goal in the first ever FA Trophy final as Macclesfield beat Telford United 2-0 at Wembley Stadium. Lyon went on to become the club’s top scorer in the 1972/73 season. Having been sold to Wigan Athletic for £400 during the summer of 1973, Dave returned to Macc in 1975 for a second short spell on loan from Goole. A spell in the Southern League with Poole Town followed by Bob Murphy brought him back to Mossley in August 1975 and made 35 appearances for the Lilywhites scoring 4 goals that season. Brief spells with Ashton United and Altrincham followed before in early 1977 he joined Southport who were then still in the Football League where he made 11 first team appearances in the old Division Four, scoring one goal before being released and joining Runcorn. He returned to Macclesfield for a third time in 1978. By the time he left Macclesfield he had played a total of 273 games for the club and scored 58 goals. He was a woodworker by trade whilst at Mossley. In more recent times he has helped to run the family’s dry cleaning shops and has coached Under-17’s in the Tameside League. |
