Born in Strabane,
Northern Ireland 16th July 1984. Rory Christopher Patterson played junior football in his native Northern Ireland before becoming a trainee with Rochdale. Turning professional in the 2002 close season, Patterson's first team debut came in October 2002 as an 86th minute substitute for Gareth Griffiths as Rochdale lost 1-0 at home to Bury in the Football League Trophy. He made his league debut the following month, again as a substitute, this time in the 64th minute for Lee McEvilly, as Rochdale lost 2-0 away to Oxford United.[3] He made a further seven appearances, all in the Football League that season. Nine first team appearances came the following season, with Patterson released by Rochdale, despite being voted their 'Young Player of the Year'. He joined Radcliffe Borough in July 2004. After an impressive start to the following season, his performances tailed off and he was released in November 2004. He signed for Mossley under Jason Beckford but made only 7 goalless appearances before signing for FC United of Manchester in early 2005, and made 126 appearances and scoring 107 goals for the club in all competitions. After much transfer speculation, Patterson signed for Bradford Park Avenue in July 2008. In 2009, Patterson signed for Droylsden after a season plagued by injury, though he still managed to get into double figures for Bradford PA. On 27 June 2009, Patterson left Droylsden to sign for IFA Premiership side Coleraine. He finished the 2009/10 season having scored 41 goals for Coleraine, and was named Ulster Footballer of the Year. Patterson joined Glentoran in the summer of 2010,having signed a pre-contract agreement with the club earlier in the year. However, in June 2010, it was announced that Patterson had joined Plymouth Argyle, after impressing at a trial in March, and that an "undisclosed fee" had been agreed with Glentoran despite him never joining the Northern Irish club. In August 2010 he made his home debut as a first-half substitute in a match against Carlisle United. He scored a late goal in the 94th minute which allowed Plymouth Argyle to draw the match. Patterson returned to Northern Ireland in July 2011, joining Linfield on loan until the end of the 2011/12 season. Having scored 4 goals in 18 league matches by January 2012, Patterson ended his loan spell with Linfield to join Derry City on a two-year contract. His competitive debut for the club saw him score a hat-trick in a 4–0 defeat of Lisburn Distillery in the Setanta Cup. In January 2015, Patterson signed for NPL Western Australia club Cockburn City SC, scoring 19 goals in 20 matches for the team. In October 2015, seven years after leaving the club, Patterson returned to F.C. United of Manchester, for whom he remains the record goalscorer with 99 goals in all official competitions. In December 2015 he signed for Derry City for a second time. Patterson received his first call-up to the Northern Ireland squad in February 2010, when Nigel Worthington named him in his squad to face Albania and made his debut as a substitute, earning praise from manager Nigel Worthington for his performance. He was then named in the squad again in May 2010 for a two match tour and it was announced that he would play as a lone striker in a match against Turkey. He scored his first international goal, a penalty, on 17th November 2010 in a friendly against Morocco to level the scores late in the game, playing the full 90 minutes. |

Born in Hazel Grove on 9th June 1960. Benjamin Phillips signed for Crewe Alexandra as a right full back as a teenager in 1977 but was released and signed for Macclesfield Town. Phillips signed for Bury in September 1980 for whom he made 14 appearances in the 1980-81 season. Upon his release from Bury he signed for Stalybridge Celtic but signed for Mossley in August 1992. He had a successful first season with Mossley and was voted Player of the Year by the supporters. He made 50 appearances scoring 1 goal for Mossley in the 1982-83 season. The following season he made 24 appearances before moving to Witton Albion in the wake of Bob Murphy's departure in December 1983. He then had spells with Macclesfield Town, Winsford United, Barrow, Buxton and Rossendale United returning to Seel Park under John Cooke in November 1990. He made 21 appearances for Mossley in the 1990-91 season but departed 9 games into the following campaign under Les Sutton and joined Curzon Ashton. He then had spells as assistant manager at Stalybridge Celtic, Congleton Town and Ashton United, and coached Mid-Cheshire League sides Grove United and Bramhall before returning for a third time to Mossley in the summer of 1997 as Manager and bringing with him as assistant former Manchester United and Exeter City player Danny Keough as his assistant. Keough had recently returned from nine years coaching in Germany. The pair took the side to a very unfortunate runners up spot in the NWCL in 1998-99 losing the title in controversial fashion on the last day of the season at Workington, and to the final of the Manchester Premier Cup in 1999-00. Phillips resigned in November 2001 to become manager of Witton Albion and later became assistant manager at Leek Town, Clitheroe and then on returning to Witton Albion. He became assistant manager of Stalybridge Celtic in 2009 and Radcliffe Borough manager in 2011. |

Born Eccles on 5th March 1902. Died 1979. Albert Frederick Phoenix often known as Ginger Phoenix played for Hadfield and for Glossop before joining Birmingham in May 1923. He made his debut playing at inside left in the First Division on 29 September 1923 in a goalless draw away against Arsenal, and played twice more during the 1923–24 season. At the end of the season he crossed the city to join Aston Villa, for whom he scored three goals, two from three First Division games and one in the FA Cup. He continued his footballing tour in the Second Division with Barnsley, followed by what proved to be his longest stay at any club – three seasons in the Third Division South with Exeter City – and, to complete the Football League set, a year at Wigan Borough in the Third Division North, where he was one of a number of new arrivals after the club's financial difficulties had forced the sale of their best players. In 1930 he spent a few months with Southern League club Bath City before returning to the Football League with Torquay United and then Mansfield Town. Phoenix then tried his luck in the first season of professional football in France with Division 1 side Racing Club de Paris. In 1933 he came back to English non-league football for a few months with Cheshire League side Sandbach Ramblers, ending the season with Shelbourne in the League of Ireland. Phoenix spent the 1934/35 season playing in the Birmingham & District League, starting off with Colwyn Bay United before moving on to Brierley Hill Alliance in January 1935. He finished off his travels with Ballymena United in the Irish League before returning to England for the final time to play out the remaining seven games of his career as a wing half with Mossley in the 1936/37 season. |

Born in Bury on the 2nd March 1951. Gary Pierce played as a junior for both his home town club and Bolton Wanderers before signing for Mossley as a 19 year old in October 1970 when he replaced the twice retired Malcolm Harding in the Mossley goal. He made his debut for the Lilywhites with a nervous display in a 5-3 win at Hyde United on 31st October 1970 and was rarely tested in the next two games, 4-1 and 5-1 wins over Oswestry Town and Burscough respectively, but then kept four clean sheets in the next five games with some brilliant displays. By then Football League scouts were flocking to watch him and in his most memorable Mossley game—an FA Trophy tie at Hednesford, he made a string of unbelievable saves as Mossley won 2-0. A performance that persuaded First Division Huddersfield Town to up their interest. Three weeks later and after just 12 games in a Mossley shirt he was transferred to the Terriers for a bargain £2,250 fee. He made 23 first team appearances for Huddersfield over the next two seasons. In 1973, he joined top flight Wolverhampton Wanderers for £45,000. Here, he was largely second choice to Phil Parkes, but after Parkes suffered injury, he played in the 1974 Football League Cup Final. Pierce made a series of outstanding saves in the game, helping Wolves defeat Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley. Pierce was an ever-present in the 1976–77 season as Wolves won the Second Division at the first attempt, but the club bought Paul Bradshaw upon their return, relegating Pierce to reserve status again. He left Molineux in 1979 for Third Division Barnsley, where he played three seasons, before ending his league career with a season at Blackpool. At Blackpool, he made 27 consecutive League appearances during the 1983–84 campaign as Sam Ellis' fourth goalkeeping change in seventeen matches. He took over from the on-loan Barry Siddall (who also later a spell at Mossley) on 26 November 1983, as the Seasiders won 2–1 at Hereford United. His final game for the club occurred on 5 May 1984, a 3–2 defeat at Aldershot. Drew Brand became Blackpool's fifth goalkeeper used that season when he took over for the three remaining League games. His contract was cancelled later that month and his professional career was over at the age of 33. Pierce then returned to non-league football with Accrington Stanley, Rossendale United and Chorley. It was a pleasant surprise when he re-signed for Mossley in the twilight of his career in 1986 and he made 40 appearances for the Lilywhites in the 1986-87 season under the management of Jimmy O’Connor before retiring from playing. Gary had a later spell as manager of Netherfield. |

Born in Church Warsop, Mansfield on 28th November 1964. Neil Geoffrey Pointon, was a left-back who is perhaps best remembered for playing for Everton, Manchester City and Oldham Athletic. Pointon began his career at lower-league Scunthorpe United and quickly established himself as a regular first-teamer and a consistent and reliable performer in defence. In the autumn of 1985, after four years at Scunthorpe, Pointon was bought by the reigning English league champions Everton for £75,000, manager Howard Kendall hoping Pointon could provide squad cover for regular left-back Pat Van Den Hauwe. Ultimately Pointon ended up featuring in the majority of Everton's games during the remainder of the 1985/86 season as a result of Van den Hauwe moving to central defence to cover for the injured centre-back Derek Mountfield. Everton finished that season as runners-up to local rivals Liverpool in both the league championship and the FA Cup, though Pointon played no part in the FA Cup final due to Mountfield's return to fitness. In the following season, Pointon struggled with injury and had to compete with not only Van den Hauwe but also veteran defender Paul Power, signed from Manchester City, for the left-back spot at Goodison. Pointon did however play enough games that year to qualify for a Championship winners medal as Everton won their second title in three years. Over the next couple of years Pointon was a consistent performer in the Everton defence when called up to the first team, although Kendall's departure to Athletic Bilbao and the break-up of the Championship winning side saw a decline in the club's fortunes. During 1989/90, Pointon became Everton's first choice left-back following the sale of Van den Hauwe to Tottenham Hotspur. In the summer of 1990, Pointon left Everton to rejoin Howard Kendall at his new club Manchester City, with Kendall receiving Pointon and £300,000 in exchange for Andy Hinchcliffe. Pointon spent two years at City as a first-team regular before moving on to Joe Royle's Oldham Athletic, then a top-flight club. Pointon spent three years at Boundary Park, during which time the club were relegated from the Premiership. On 10 April 1994, Pointon put the Latics ahead in the 106th minute (extra time) of the FA Cup semi final at Wembley Stadium against Manchester United, only for Mark Hughes to equalise one minute before the final whistle and force a replay. The replay at Maine Road saw the Latics lose 4-1. United went on to win both the Premier League title and FA Cup while, while Pointon and his colleagues had the double misery of an FA Cup exit and Premier League relegation in less than a month. Pointon joined Scottish Premier Division outfit Heart of Midlothian in 1995, enjoying a number of seasons up in Scotland before later playing for Walsall, Chesterfield and Hednesford Town. He scored for Hednesford against former club Oldham Athletic in an FA Cup tie at Keys Park, soon before being handed the reins as Manager at Hednesford. He lasted as little as 9 games in his first Managerial post before being sacked after not winning a single game. The club later got relegated, but very few fans of the Staffordshire Club actually put the blame with him. After a spell as player-manager of Retford United he joined Mossley as a player under Ally Pickering and helped Mossley to win the Worthington Challenge Trophy at Gigg Lane, Bury with a 2-1 win over Clitheroe in his last ever professional game. He later worked for the Bolton Wanderers Academy team as a coach. |

Born 27th August 1950 Harry Pollitt was recommended by the then Mossley scout Bob Murphy to manager George Sievwright in early 1973. The young defender was at the time playing amateur football for Newton Heath Catholic Club but Murphy rightly believed that the talented but raw 22 year old would be able to make what was in retrospect a massive step up to the Northern Premier League. Harry made his Mossley debut in a 2-1 Reporter Floodlit Cup game against Stalybridge Celtic at Seel Park on 5th March 1973, but didn’t make his NPL debut until 14th April in a 0-0 draw at Skelmersdale United. When regular centre half Eric Brodie was suspended early the following season Harry was called into action again and gave some impressive performances, so much so that when Brodie returned he was moved to midfield allowing Harry to continue at centre back alongside the slightly more experienced Tony Steenson. He remained an ever present in the 73-74 season and the following term was switched to full back and proved more than able at both right and left back. The 1976-77 season saw Harry rewarded for some outstanding performances when he was voted supporters Player of the Year as he moved back to the centre of defence partnering the experienced Albert Jackson. Harry was then a key member of the side that swept all before them to win the NPL League and Cup double in 1978-79 and the League again the following season and he also appeared in the Mossley team that played Dagenham at Wembley in the 1980 FA Trophy Final which was to be his last Mossley appearance as he retired from competitive football following the final. Harry Pollitt made a total of 333 appearances in eight seasons at Mossley, scoring 10 goals. |
