Ray Samways was an amateur full back who began his career with Rochdale team Sacred Heart FC before signing for Rochdale.
He Failed to make the first team at Spotland and moved to Don Wilson's Mossley where he made 10 appearances in the 1964-65 season.
Later played as a forward for Ashton United, Nelson and Stalybridge Celtic.

Born in Middlesbrough on 24th August 1924.
Died June 2013.
Centre half John 'Jack' Saunders joined Darlington following his demob from the army in 1946 and signed for Darlington making 67 appearances.
He played for Chelsea from 1949 making 52 first team apperarances before joing Crystal Palace in 1954 where he made 59 appearances and in 1957 he signed for Chester making 67 appearances and scoring 3 goals.
In 1959 he joined Hyde United and two seasons later, in August 1960, signed for Mossley making 100 appearances and scoring one goal in three seasons at Seel Park.
He retired from playing at the end of the 1962/63 season at the age of 39.

Creative midfield player signed by Bryan Griffiths from Marine in August 1989, transferred to Knowsley United in December 1989 following Griffiths' departure.
Later with Bangor City aned Caernarfon Town.
Much later he was the founder of the 'Save Grassroots Football campaign and a coach at Woolton FC in Liverpool.

Born in Bury on 3rd January 1989.
Goalkeeper Russell Saunders began his career as a trainee with Wigan Athletic but was released in 2009 and joined Ashton United.
He then had a a spell with Altrincham before joining Hyde FC in 2010 were he was then voted Supporters Player of the Year.
He joined Chorley in 2011 and was their regular no.1 throughout the season.
He joined Stockport Sports at the start of the 2012/13 season before moving to New Mills in December 2012.
His stay with The Millers was a brief one and he joined Mossley in January 2013 replacing Martin Pearson as the Lilywhites first choice keeper.
Later with Droylsden, Hyde United, Prestwich Heys and Glossop North End.

Former Droylsden midfielder signed from Accrington Stanley who made a solitary Mossley appearance before he was transferred to Warrington Town for a £200 fee after failing to settle at Seel Park.
Later with Curzon Ashton and Springhead.

Born in Manchester on 20th September 1967.
Ian Scott started his career with his local club Manchester City after progressing through the youth ranks at Maine Road. He spent two years in the Manchester City (24-3) first team before joining Stoke City (30-2) in 1989.
His first season with Stoke was a poor one as the club were relegated to the Third Division. He spent the 1990/91 season in the clubs reserves and also went out on loan to Crewe Alexandra.
And after failing to establish himself in the squad in the 1991/92 season, Scott left Stoke in 1992 and joined Bury (9-2).
He joined Mossley on loan from Bury making 2 appearance on loan in December 1992.

Born 18th August 1991.
Well travelled goalkeeper Tom Scott was signed from North West Counties Leaguers Burscough in January 2022.
Tom has also played for Darwen, Kendal Town, Northwich Victoria, 1874 Northwich, Runcorn Linnets, Padiham, Ossett United, Widnes, AFC Liverpool, Wythenshawe Amateurs and Winsford United.

Born 5th September 1997.
Teenage left back signed on work experience from Oldham Athletic in December 2016. Later with Glossop North End.

Born in Holytown, Lanarkshire on 4th August 1900.
James Scullion was a former Carluke Rovers, Bury, King's Park, Workington, Fulham (1-0), Lytham, Crewe Alexandra (73-41), Wigan Borough (27-11) and Stockport County (33-10), inside forward who made 60 Mossley appearances scoring 45 goals in two seasons with the club in the early 1930's.
He then had spells with Stalybridge Celtic, Hurst, Buxton, Darwen, Bacup Borough and Droylsden before he returned to Mossley as team manager in August 1936.
He saw his Mossley charges endure a difficult season finishing in 17th place in the League and losing to Ashton National in the final of the Manchester FA Challenge Shield.

2012/13

Born in London on 27th January 1989.
Tyron Sealey began his career at Stevenage Borough progressing to the first team in the 2006/07 season. He then had spells with Maidenhead United, Slough Town, Ebbsfleet United, Tooting & Mitcham United and Beaconsfield SYCOB.
Moving north to attend Manchester University he joined Irlam in November 2012, signing for Mossley in January 2013.
He made a solitary Mossley appearance as a substitute before moving on to Droylsden before re-signing for Mossley in August 2013 making one further appearance.

Former Stafford Rangers left back signed frrom Rochdale (20-0) on loan making a solitary Mossley appearance in February 1974.

Wing half signed from Lytham who made 3 Mossley appearances in the 1936/37 season.

Goalkeeper who made 7 Mossley appearances in the 1963/64 season. Previously with Radcliffe Borough.

Born in Oldham on 2nd October 1916.
Died 22nd October 1973.  
Jack Shaw played local football in the Blackpool area for South Shore Wesleyans and for Lytham before joining Oldham Athletic in 1934.
He appeared only twice in the Football League in two seasons with Oldham, and joined Mossley where he made 44 appearances in all competitions in the 1936/37 season.
Returning to the Football League with Grimsby Town, he played seven First Division games before moving on to fellow First Division club Birmingham.
He went straight into the starting eleven, and played 11 consecutive games, but the team failed to avoid relegation.
The outbreak of the WWII meant Shaw was unable to establish himself with the club.
He joined Watford in 1945, but returned to Mossley before the Football League resumed after the war.
He made 50 appearances that season and was to continue as the first name on the team sheet for the next five years until his retirement from football in May 1951.
Shaw was presented with a clock by Mossley AFC Chairman George Clayton upon his retirement from playing.
Shaw was a legend during his time at Mossley and in one famous incident scored a goal by dribbling through the entire Witton Albion team before shooting a great goal.
Shaw had starred in the 1949-50 FA Cup run and such was his influence that despite suffering from a severe bout of flu he played in the FA Cup 2nd Round replay against Nuneaton Borough.
In all Jack Shaw made 282 appearances for Mossley.

Young attacking midfielder signed by Jason Beckford from Huddersfield Town in August 2005 making 78 appearances and scoring 10 goals before he was transfrerred to New Mills in the closed season of 2007.
He was re-signed by Chris WIllcock in October 2009 making a further 11 Mossley appearances before he was transferred to Trafford in December 2009.
Later with Witton Albion,Trafford and West Didsbury & Chorlton.

Amateur goalkeeper signed from Crompton Athletic FC making 2 Mossley appearances in the 1931/32 season deputising for regular keeper Harry Gregory.

Strong tackling left sided central defender or wing back Steve Sheil, affectionately nick-named ’Sas’ signed for Mossley in February 2003 from Flixton having done the 2002 pre season at Mossley before signing for the Manchester club.
He began his career as a junior with Blackpool and Rotherham United before moving into non league as a 17 year old with Droylsden. Spells with Curzon Ashton and Ramsbottom United followed.
He soon became an essential member of the Mossley set up and was a popular winner of the supporters Player of the Year award in Mossley's promotion winning 2003/04 season.
During Steve’s time at Mossley his father Brian, a big fan of both his son and Mossley FC, sadly passed away and a plaque was placed on the outside of Mossley’s boardroom in his honour.
After making 179 appearances for Mossley and scoring 19 goals Sas moved to Curzon Ashton for the 2007/08 season but returned to Seel Park in October 2007 making a further 10 appearances and scoring once before departing for Bacup Borough for the following season.
Sas was a hugely popular player during his time at Seel Park, a rugged and solid defender who also possessed an extremely long throw in.

Born 12th July 1999
Ryan Shenton joined Mossley in June 2020 and boasts an impressive footballing CV having been a member of the first ever quadruple winning Curzon Ashton Youth Team in 2016-17.
He captained Chadderton at age 19 whilst on loan from Curzon before being recalled back to the Tameside Stadium. Ryan scored the only goal on his full debut for Curzon in a 1-0 victory over York City.
Chadderton-based Ryan signed for FC United of Manchester in the closed season of 2019 but picked up an injury during pre-season. He ended the campaign with spells at New Mills and Barnoldswick Town, scoring 14 goals in the process.

Born 29th November 2021
William Shepherd is a midfield player or wing back signed in September 2021 from Warrington Town for whom he had made several appearances from the bench this season.
Will had joined Warrington in the closed season of 20201 after graduating from Salford City's academy and under 23's, making his first team debut in the Football League Trophy against Manchester United u21's.
Transferred to Colne in January 2022.

Born on 12th August 1967.
Darren Sheridan started his footballing career at Leeds United as an apprentice.
After he was released he quit playing football for a time. In the 1987/88 season he joined Mossley but after a brief unsuccessful spell he moved to Curzon Ashton.
In the summer of 1992 he signed up for Winsford United and the 1992-93 season will go down in Winsford folklore as Mike McKenzie's men won an astonishing five trophies - the NPL Challenge Cup, NPL President's Cup, Cheshire Senior Cup, Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup and NPL Runners Up Cup.
Winsford also finished second to Southport and their points total is a record for the most points accrued without winning the title. The team included Wayne Collins who joined Crewe at the end of the season, and Jon Whitney who joined Huddersfield Town. Darren was another of the players to move into professional football, and at the age of 25 he joined Barnsley (171-5) for a reported £10,000 fee before moving to Wigan Athletic (71-4) on a free transfer and then Oldham Athletic (88-3).
Later with Clyde and St Johnstone. Then joint manager of Barrow from 2007-2012. Appointed manager of Salford City in 2012 but finished the 2012/13 season as a player with Radcliffe Borough.
He is the younger brother of former Republic of Ireland international and well known Football League manager John Sheridan.

Speedy right winger Lee Shillito was signed by Jason Beckford from Conference North side Leigh RMI where he earned a reputation as a direct and skilful goal provider.
Shillito was previously with Altrincham, where he graduated through their youth team, and Trafford.
Released in January 2007.
Later with Chorley and West Didsbury & Chorlton.

David Short is a powerful striker signed in July 2015 after a brief spell with West Disbury & Chorlton after previously playing for Leek CSOB and 1874 Northwich.
Transferred to Northwich Victoria in December 2016.
Has since played for Stockport Town, Congleton Town and Winsford United.

Born in Ellesmere Port on 12th September 1954.
Barry Alfred Siddall was a very experienced and well travelled goalkeeper who played for Bolton Wanderers (137-0), Sunderland (167-0), Port Vale (81-0), Stoke City (20-0), Manchester City (6-0), Blackpool (110-0), Stockport County (21-0), and Hartlepool United (11-0).
Siddall began his career with Bolton Wanderers in 1972. In four years with the Burnden Park club he made 137 league appearances. In 1976, he moved north-east to join Sunderland. He made 167 league appearances for Jimmy Adamson's men, with a loan spell at Darlington during the 1980–81 season. In August 1982, Siddall signed for Port Vale, and went on to make 81 league appearances for them in two years.
The first choice keeper in the 1982–83 season, he was sidelined for three months after sustaining a knee injury in a 3–1 win at Bristol City on 27 December 1982. Teammate and club legend Phil Sproson named him as the club's best goalkeeper of the 1980s.
He handed in his notice in October 1983 following a contract dispute and was loaned to Sam Ellis's Blackpool. Despite only spending the one month at Bloomfield Road, during his seven league games for the Seasiders, Blackpool were the victors in six of them, which assisted in their finishing sixth in Division Four.
He was in goal for Vale against Blackpool in a 1–1 draw on 18 September 1984, but his return to Bloomfield Road was an unhappy one as he injured his ankle. He lost his place to Neville Southall, but regained it in December 1984.
Siddall was loaned out to rivals Stoke City in January 1985, the move was made permanent two months later . In two years with the "Potters" he made twenty appearances in the league.
He was also loaned out to Tranmere Rovers and Manchester City during his time at the Victoria Ground. In 1986, Siddall returned to Blackpool, this time on a permanent basis. Sam Ellis was still in charge of the Bloomfield Road club, now a division higher, and Siddall went on to make 37 appearances during the 1986–87 season, as the club finished ninth in Division Three.
He was also first-choice during 1987–88, making 38 appearances, but in 1988–89 he was dropped a couple of times in favour of his deputies, Gary Kelly and Vince O'Keefe.
He still made 35 starts in the league, however, but was sold at the end of the season to Stockport County.
Siddall went on to play for four more clubs in as many years: Hartlepool United, Carlisle United, Chester City and Preston North End.
He signed temporariily for Mossley from West Bromwich Albion in the 1990-91 season making 4 appearances before returning to the Football league with Carlisle United (24-0) and later with Chester City (9-0).
Leaving the Football League in 1993, he later played for Northwich Victoria, Horwich RMI and Burnley before becoming a freelance goalkeeping coach.

Born in Broughty Ferry, Scotland on 10th September 1937.
The delightfully named George Edgar Smollett Sievwright signed for Dundee United from his local junior club Broughty Ferry Athletic in 1957.
A physical combative hard as nails wing half, he was signed by Oldham Athletic for a £500 fee in the summer of 1963 and made 37 appearances for the Latics scoring 4 goals in the 1963-64 season.
At the end of that season he was released to join Tranmere Rovers but spent the year playing for their reserve side in the Cheshire League.
He then moved to Rochdale where he was able to get back into League football making 32 appearances scoring 1 goal in the 1965-66 season. Sievwright then spent the next six years with Macclesfield Town and played for them firstly in the Cheshire League and then the Northern Premier League also appearing in the inaugural 1970 FA Trophy final gaining a winners medal as Macc beat Telford United at Wembley Stadium.
Following Don Wilson's resignation as Mossley manager in November 1972 Sievwright applied for the position and became a shock appointment as everyone outside of the boardroom believed that midfield maestro Lennie Dickenson would get the job. Dickenson left the club as a result and the Saddleworth based Sievwright spent the next few months dismantling Wilson's team and replacing them with an odd-ball assortment of failed ex League club apprentices and unsuccessful local non-league players.
After having just two managers in the previous fifteen years Sievwright's stay was to be comparatively short and he was dismissed to cheers of relief from the fans following a 3-0 defeat at Fleetwood on 27th January 1974.
He had been appointed as a player manager but in 14 months in charge he made only 2 appearances in the team.
Sievwright had a later equally unsuccessful spell in charge at Stalybridge Celtic.

Wing half who made 74 Mossley appearances and scored 4 goals over the course of in the first two post WWII seasons before moving to Ashton United.

Damian Skolorzynski is a Polish born left back signed in December 2016 from Ashton United. He graduated through the youth system at Polish top division club Wisla Krakow making his first team debut in 2011.
He is a former Poland u-18 International who has since played for LKS Nieciecza and SC Plomien Elk.
Later with Winsford United.

Striker signed after playing in Australia and Malaysia.
Later became a youth coach with Oldham Athletic and Blackburn Rovers.
He scored in his only Mossley appearance in December 1989.

Born in Barnsley on on 20th June 1943.
Geoffrey "Geoff" Sleight joined Bolton Wanderers after leaving school and was thrust into the first team spotlight almost immediately by then Bolton manager Bill Ridding and made his debut against Manchester City in September 1961.
During his time with the club he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Nat Lofthouse, Eddie Hopkinson, Doug Holden, Bryan Edwards and Francis Lee.
Sadly, after just three first team games in the Outside Left position and in the shadow of England international Brian Pilkington he was told there was no long term future for him at Burnden Park and he was released in 1963.
He went on to play for Wigan Athletic then still in the Cheshire League, making 16 appearances in the 1963/64 season.
Sleight then went to Asutralia and signed for the Prague club in Sydney and won representative honours, firstly in 1965 when he played for Sydney XI vs Hapoel Tel-Aviv. On the back of his performances in Australia he was invited to represent the Australian National team and made two appearances in World Cup qualifiers against North Korea and Cambodia.
Returning to England in 1967 Sleight returned to Cheshire League football and joined Stalybridge Celtic before moving on to Buxton where he made 174 appearances.
Bob Murphy brought Sleight to Mossley in August 1974 and he made his Mossley debut on the left side of midfield in a 0-0 draw at Scarborough on 17th August 1974 playing in all bar one of Mossley’s 75 competitive games that season.
Mostly employed at left back in the following seasons Sleight proved to be a very consistent and popular player at Mossley as he went on to make 148 appearances, scoring 10 goals for the Lilywhites.
When Bob Murphy’s first spell as Mossley manager ended in November 1976, Sleight took over as Caretaker-Manager and took charge of six games which saw Mossley win 4, draw 1 and lose 1.
He was overlooked for the manager’s job which went to fellow Yorkshire man Howard Wilkinson and Sleight departed to play for Droylsden after just four games of Wilkinson’s reign.
Sleight briefly returned to Mossley in September 1978 but made just 2 further appearances again under Bob Murphy.
He was then appointed as player-manager of Frickley Athletic, and guided the team to promotion to the Football Conference in 1980.
He then had a later spell as manager of Goole Town.
Sleight was later reunited with Howard Wilkinson as he was appointed as chief scout for Leeds United between 1993 and 1996.

Signed by Howard Wilkinson from Retford Town in April 1977 making 24 appearances before he transferred to Retford Town in November 1977.
His only goal for Mossley was a spectacular 30 yard match winning goal at Wigan Athletic in September 1977.

Former Birmingham City goalkeeper signed by Eddie Quigley from Stalybridge Celtic in August 1959, making 139 Mossley appearances in three seasons before transferred back to Stalybridge Celtic in 1962.
He later played for Buxton and Altrincham and then became manager of Stalybridge Celtic and coached in Saudi Arabia and Iceland.

Born in Fleetwood on 7th February 1921. Died in Bury 14th July 2013.
George Beacher Smith emerged from the Adelphi Lads' Club in Salford. He joined Manchester City just before the War and played 166 times for them, scoring a highly creditable 75 goals.
City's loss was Chesterfield's gain, and George stayed long enough at Saltergate to take third place in the Spireites' list of all-time League goalscorers.
He was immediately noticeable as `the one with the withered arm.' In fact, his right arm and hand were badly wounded in a "friendly fire" incident during a training excercise while serving with the King's African Rifles in South Africa. Surgery repaired the arm but left City with concerns about his ability to resume a football career.
George went back to Maine Road and settled those concerns in an empahatic manner. After scoring 45 goals in 90 wartime games for City, he won a Division Two championship medal in 1946-47, scoring five goals against Newport County at the end of that season.
At Saltergate, he scored at least fifteen goals in each of five successive seasons and was selected to play for the Third (North) against the Third (South) in a televised match at Peel Park, Accrington, in 1955.
Upon leaving The Spireites in 1958 George returned to Manchester, working until retirement in Kennings' tyre department in the city.
He served non-league football in the area, being player at Mossley, where he had a brief but dramatic 9 game spell in the 1958/59 season, Hyde United and Prestwich Heys.
George guested on a 1958 "This is Your Life" tribute to Matt Busby that went out a month before the Munich disaster.

Born at Bowdon in 1923.
Left Half Gordon Smith had been with Witton Albion before joining Altrincham for 1949-50 where he stayed until the 1953-54 season. He amassed 151 appearances, and scored 25 goals for Altrincham before joining Mossley under Jack Boothway in 1954 making 39 appearances and scoring one goal.
He retired in 1956 and became trainer and later manager of Linotype FC.
He was later Altrincham reserve team manager.

Sheffield based Ian Smith was signed by Dick Bate from Yorkshire League side Mexborough Town Athletic in September 1977 making his debut as a substitute for Dick Bate’s side in a 2-0 League Cup defeat by Lancaster on 30th September 1977.
Hampered by injury, the young striker hardly set the world on fire in his early Mossley appearances, in fact, his unorthodox appearance and a lazy eye made him a fans scapegoat in Bate’s less than successful side.
Bate was sacked at the beginning of January 1978, just prior the away game at unbeaten League leaders Boston United with trainer Bernard Keeley and captain Leo Skeete in temporary charge of the team.
Mossley weren’t given any hope of success at Boston but Smith stole the show running 3/4 the length of the pitch to score a last minute winner against all the odds.
He finished the season with 10 goals. The following season playing in a 4-2-4 formation under Bob Murphy - Smith, playing alongside Skeete, Dave Moore and Eamonn O’Keefe caused havoc in opponents defences throughout a superb season that saw Mossley win the Northern Premier League and Cup double with Smith netting 38 goals.
The following season saw more of the same as the livewire right sided striker bagged a further 31 goals as Mossley retained the NPL title and reached the final of the FA Trophy at Wembley where he scored Mossley’s goal in the unlucky final defeat.
He was then selected to play for the England Semi Pro side in a four nation tournament in Italy where he played against Italy and Scotland before being transferred to Scarborough for a £9,000 fee in the summer of 1980.
He went on to play 77 games for Scarborough, scoring 16 goals.
Smith later played for Matlock Town and Alfreton Town and was later involved in coaching in the Sheffield area.

Amateur player signed from Linthwaite FC on trial making a solitary Mossley appearance in the 1951/52 season.

Born in Darwen, big central defender Jonathon Smith was signed by Jason Beckford from Conference North club Barrow in December 2006.
Smith began his non league career with his hometown club Darwen in the North West Counties League. He then moved into the Unibond League with Great Harwood Town before joining Accrington Stanley in the summer of 1999. He was a regular for Stanley before joining Barrow on loan in August 2004. He was recalled from his second month's loan by Accrington in early September '04. Smith was released by Accrington Stanley in May 2005 and soon after signed for Barrow on a permanent basis.
He made 20 Mossley appearances before moving on at the end of Mossley's relegation season of 2006/07.
He then played for Fleetwood Town, Clitheroe, Radcliffe Borough, Lancaster City and Chorley.
He eventually became a coach with Chorley after retiring from playing in 2011.

Signed from Glossop on trial making 2 Mossley appearances in the Lancs Floodlit League in the 1986/87 season.

Born on 14th June 1987.
Midfielder Richard Sopel was signed from Redlands United in Brisbane, Australia. Rick is a former Myerscough College graduate who was previously with Curzon Ashton, Stalybridge Celtic, Rochdale Town and Chadderton.

Born in Bradford on 1st May 1929. Died in Cambridge 12th November 2010.
Peter (Paddy) Tasker Sowden won representative honours for Yorkshire Schools before joining the ground staff at Blackpool.
Although he graduated to become a professional at Bloomfield Road, Paddy did not break into the first team and left the club at the end of the 1947-48 season.
However, after a very brief spell with non-league Bacup Borough he rejoined the senior ranks, signing for Hull City. Like all young men of the time Paddy was required to do a spell of National Service, which disrupted his career with the Tigers, but a posting in the south of England enabled him to make his Football League debut for Aldershot (4-0) against Leyton Orient in October 1950.
Paddy eventually left Hull in the summer of 1952 and signed for Gillingham (134-27) for a fee of £3,000. Over the next four seasons he was a first-team regular for the Kent club, earning a reputation as a skilful inside forward with excellent ball control.
He scored 27 goals in 134 appearances for the Gills then decided to return north, firstly to Accrington Stanley (54-13) and then to Wrexham (38-4) before a string of injuries brought his playing career in senior football to an end. Paddy continued to play in non-league football in the North West for several seasons, turning out for the likes of Chorley, Great Harwood and Mossley before switching to management.
This in turn led to a return to senior football when manager Les Shannon appointed him as youth team coach for Blackpool.
He spent three years in the position before leaving to become assistant-manager to Harry Haslam at Luton Town in 1972. Paddy helped the Hatters to win promotion in 1974 then joined Ron Atkinson at Cambridge United in a similar role from 1975 to 1977, and serving the U's as general manager until 1979.
Finally, he spent two years in Canada as general manager of NASL club Vancouver Whitecaps before returning to England and settling in the Cambridge area.

Merseyside based defender Tom Spearritt was signed by Chris Willcock in October 2009 from Chorley.
He began his career as a youngster with Wigan Athletic, He then played for Southport, Runcorn Halton, Warrington Town, Witton Albion, Cammell Laird, Colwyn Bay, and Chorley.
He had been team captain with most of his previous clubs.
Released in January 2010 and joined Prescot Cables.

Inside forward who was signed in March 1922 and was transferred to Port Vale in September 1923 after scoring 24 goals in 44 Mossley appearances.
He failed to make the first team for Port Vale despite scoriung regularly for their Reserve team in the Cheshire League, including a hat-trick against Mossley.
He re-signed for Mossley from Port Vale in January 1925 made a further 16 appearances scoring 12 goals.
He was the Brother of one time Mossley team-mate Herbert Spiby.

He was signed by his former Blackburn team-mate Len Butt for Mossley in August 1948 and made 124 Mossley appearances scoring 41 goals in three seasons with the club.

Gary Stewart was an exciting striker signed from Irlam Town who made his Mossley debut in a 2-0 win at Buxton. Stewart went on to make 88 appearances for the Lilywhites and scored 31 goals.
He was Mossley's top scorer the following season 1985/86 with 26 goals when he formed a formidable strike partnership with Martin Forry.
Stewart was transferred to Northwich Victoria at the end of that season, but after successful spells with Altrincham and Witton Albion.
He briefly returned to Mossley early in the 1992/93 season before moving to Curzon Ashton. He is the brother of former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City star Paul Stewart.

One of the most popular Manchester City players of all time, Mike Summerbee was born in Preston but grew up and learned his football in the West Country.
The son of another former player, George, young Mike took his first steps on a magnificent footballing career in /the non-League colours of Cheltenham.
As a 17 year-old he then joined Swindon Town in the Third Division. Mike made over 200 appearances before moving from Swindon to Manchester City in 1965 for a bargain £35,000.
He was a tenacious winger, who also made a number of appearances at Centre Forward. The crowds were delighted with the stylish Summerbee whose league debut against Middlesbrough was on August 21st 1965. Mike's name first appeared on the score sheets when the Blues secured a consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat by Birmingham on December the same year. As a player his sheer presence created havoc in opposing defences, and many chances for his colleagues.
Joe Mercer once said about Mike: "Mike is the bravest player with his back to the game I have ever seen. He is strong when he is going past them. When he is buzzing he takes them all apart. He is very positive and quite a character." The swinging sixties scene in Manchester saw Mike and United's George Best making quite an impression off the field as well as on it.
He went on to make a positive contribution to City's success scoring 67 goals between 1965 and 1975 (all competitions). In the mid-1960s England Coach Sir Alf Ramsey was looking closely at City personnel, and he eventually chose seven Maine Road players to represent England. The first to recieve this honour was Mike Summerbee w1hose initial England outing was in an under-23 game with Turkey.
Together with Colin Bell and Francis Lee he represented England in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. The fans wished them good luck with a dedicated song: "Hey ho, hey ho - we're off to Mexico - with Bell, and Lee, and Summerbee - hey ho, hey ho".
He should have been a regular in the international side for many years. As it was he made his debut in 1968 against Scotland at the age of 25, and made his eight and final appearance five years later against the USSR. Mike had over 400 appearances for City before moving to Burnley (51-0)for £25,000 in 1975.
He ended his footballing career as a player-manager at Stockport County (87-6) in 1979. Summerbee signed for Mossley in November 1980 but made just one appearance, albeit a significant one as he helped the Lilywhites to beat Crewe Alexandra in the FA Cup. in 1979.
For years he ran his own manufacturing of hand made shirts, where among his customers you'll find such names as Sylvester Stallone and David Bowie. Currently living in a 1800 parsonage in Cheshire. During the 1990s he helped Francis Lee launch his take-over of City, and following the successful completion of that returned to the club to assist the Commercial Department with sales of City's corporate facilities. In 1994 he had the fortune to see his own son Nicky follow in his footsteps and join City from Swindon as a professional football player. Mike also took part in the footballing war film "Escape to victory".

Centre forward Harold Ross Sutherland began his career with Sedgeley Park but after scoring 4 goals in just 3 appearances for Mossley he joined Leeds United in July 1938 with a big goal-scoring reputation.
A two-goal debut in Leeds Reserves clinched him a professional contract and he also scored on his League debut. He played in three consecutive games as Leeds lost 1-4 at Molineux, 1-2 at home to Everton and 0-2 at Fratton Park against Portsmouth.
He looked to have the makings of a good player but the war disrupted his career and those three games turned out to be his only games for Leeds in the Football League.
He turned out for Leeds, scoring three times in five games in the Wartime fixtures. He played in the first two games of the 1940-41 North Regional League as Leeds drew 2-2 with Bradford City at Elland Road and Sutherland scored the second Leeds goal on his Wartime debut on 31st August 1940 and then there was a 0-1 loss to Newcastle United at St James� Park in the second game. He did not play for Leeds again until the 1944-45 Football League Northern Section First Championship, when he played his final three games as a Leeds player in the first three games of the campaign.
The first two games were at Centre Forward in a 3-4 loss at Bradford Park Avenue and a 3-3 draw at Elland Road in the reverse fixture and on both occasions Sutherland scored the third Leeds goal. His final game came on 9th September 1944 in a 0-1 defeat by Sunderland at Elland Road. He also guested for Southport, Rochdale, Accrington Stanley, Doncaster Rovers and Chesterfield in war-time before resuming his career at Elland Road. He failed to make the first team in his post-war spell and in May 1947 he was transferred to Exeter City.
He had scored three goals in fourteen appearances but then went to Bournemouth in July 1948 and failed to get into their first team.
He was given a free transfer in May 1949.
He later became a coach with Altona City in Melbourne, Australia.

Herbert Swindells commenced his professional career at Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 1927 where he was twice top scorer. Whilst at Crewe he scored 126 League goals which at that time was a club record.
He then moved to Chelmsford, Barrow and later to Bradford City.
After a brief 2 game spell at Mossley he became joint top-scorer for Macclesfield Town in the 1946-47 season alongside Billy Lomax and Harry Ryan.
He was the club’s reserve team manager before taking over as manager in May 1949.
Bert led the side to the Cheshire Senior Cup final in 1950 (losing to Northwich Victoria) and the Cheshire League Cup Final in 1951(losing to Altrincham) but they went one better winning the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1951 when they beat Northwich Victoria 3-2.
He resigned as manager in October 1951.
He also had a second spell as manager from November 1955 to the end of the 1957-58 season.

Versatile English / Malaysian defender Nick Swirad was signed in the closed season of 2011 from New Mills who he helped to the NWCL title. Equally at home at right back or in the centre of defence, the former FC United of Manchester defender was the Millers Manager's and Player's Player of the Year in 2010/11.
He was transferred to Ashton United in October 2011 and later played with Stocksbridge Park Steels.
He has since played for Launceston Northern Rangers in Australia before playing for Johor Darul Ta'zim II and Melaka United in the Malaysian Super League. In 2019 he joined another Malaysian Super League club PKNS FC.

Born in Bradford 28th October 1959.
Bradford born of Hungarian parents, Tibor Lewis Szabo graduated through Bradford City's junior teams and made 12 first team appearances before his release in 1979, whereupon he signed for Macclesfield Town.
He began to make a name for himself as a quality forward with Macc' and was considered an excellent signing when he arrived at Bob Murphy's Mossley, along with goalkeeper Mike Sherlock, in a deal that cost Mossley a total of £2,000 in August 1980.
Both he and Sherlock took a little while to settle in the team but Mossley fans began to realise that they had a quality player when he scored a superb hat-trick in a 4-1 win at Grantham in November of that year.
Never a prolific scorer Tibor more often popped up with the vital goal and he netted 14 times that season as he proved to be an able provider for fellow strikers Leo Skeete and Dave Moore and later Phil Derbyshire and Billy Hughes.
The following season saw him score on 12 occasions and then 17 times in the 1982-83 season as he completed three seasons with a Mossley side that had finished Northern Premier League runners up in each of those successive years.
His last full season 1983-84 was a traumatic one for Mossley as five years of unparalleled success came to an end with an almighty bump but Tibor was top scorer with 15 goals and shared the 'Player of the Year' award with Jimmy O'Connor before being transferred to Gainsborough Trinity at the end of the season.
He re-signed from Gainsborough on loan the following season and scored 3 goals in 7 appearances before moving to Goole Town.
Mossley then re-signed him for a third time, from Goole in the 1985-86 season but after 2 goals in 5 appearances he moved to Morecambe and later played for Buxton.
Tibor played a toytal of 197 games for Mossley scoring 63 goals.
He has, since retirement from playing, coached at Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Leeds United, Bradford City and Halifax Town’s academies and centres of excellence and in the USA.
