Mossley
finally earned a hard working victory over a strong and direct Brigg
Town side in the Seel Park mud on Monday with two late goals.
Brigg had the better of the opening exchanges and Phil Melville was
twice called upon to make good saves but as the half wore on Mossley
got into their stride and Jordan Goodeve, Mario Daniel and Shaun Dootson
all went close for the home side. Chris Downey had a goal ruled out
for off-side and Daniel's effort through a crowded box seemed bound
for the net until it hit team-mate Meadowcroft and ricocheted to safety.
Matty Taylor then headed off the line as Chatterton's chip beat the
advancing Melville.
The second half was similarly end to end but it was the visitors who
broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. A corner from the right was
unlucky helped into the net at the near post by the otherwise impeccable
debutant Barrie Hart. Taylor then again cleared off
the line just before Mossley re-introduced Leon Mike to the action
after a lengthy injury lay off in the 69th minute. The former Man
City and Aberdeen centre forward immediately started to cause problems
for a strong visiting defence. Mossley were becoming bogged down in
the clinging Seel Park mud and Brigg were massing in defence and time-wasting
as often as possible. Then up stepped Oldham Athletic youngster Paul
Armstrong, who is at Mossley on work experience and having
replaced Tony Coyne on the hour mark, jinked inside from the left
wing and unleashed a tremendous daisy-cutter into the far bottom corner
from fully 30 yards.
With just five minutes left on the clock Mossley forged a winner.
Mossley won a corner on the right, Barrie Hart curled his flag kick
under the bar and outstanding new team captain Paul Challinor
was in the right place at the right time to force the ball home from
close range.
Mossley missed a couple of chances to make the game safe as Brigg
suddenly crumbled and although the Lincolnshire side won a couple
of late free kicks they were unable to threaten and Mossley ended
a barren run with three much needed points.
